Funny thing, today I dreamed about a virtual world that was a mix of the sims and second life. You had the building mechanics of the sims, but you could customize textures and even upload new meshes like SL, you purchased your land and you could build on it, no prim limitation and the tools were easy and intuitive to use. You could even have a "town view" with a free camera if you were the owner and didn't want to use an avatar to walk around the place.

I woke up sad it wasn't a real game.

Throw in some Empyrion: Galactic Survival with the Sims and SL and you have my dream virtual universe. No, not world, universe. Complete with solar systems to explore and inhabit. :D

Ain't got patience to read all the other replies, but I visited all of these virtual worlds you listed. My first virtual world was Habbo Hotel and I joined in July 13th 2006. It was magical then.

My favourites are/were Habbo, Mokitown, VMK, Coke Studios (these two were co-created by Sulake, the same company who created Habbo), vSide (sadly abandoned after its acquisition by another company), IMVU, Gaia Online, etc. Of course I also love Second Life, but I am a functional noob here. I always wanted to try out There.com but nothing was truly free, and it took me a long time for me to be allowed to join. It shut down for a while but it is back up. Membership is now paid.

Most of these games you listed were for kids or teenagers. I joined Second Life when I was a minor in 2006, and I had many accounts throughout the years, but I never stayed for long.

Virtual worlds and online games (such as MMORPGs) have been in steady decline for the past few years, I'd say around 2011. Facebook got super popular and nobody wants to spend time with fantasylands anymore.

I'll copy something I wrote on another post.

"99% of the online games and virtual worlds I frequented are dead or in limbo, and I lost contact with nearly everyone from the past. This makes me sad because I see so much potential in things like this. Just as an example, I used to hang out with my friend in Habbo Hotel, but he's been super busy with RL affairs and lost interest in online games now that he's grown up. I decided to come back here again and I'm trying to show this place to some friends - one of them loved it and I'm glad.

I might even show SL to my mother. She is older and has a lot of free time. I think she'd enjoy socialising here and exploring.

It does seem like VR worlds are on the rise, so that's another cool idea."

SL because the currency can be sold into cash and the customers appreciate value.

And most important thing , the rules here are the most relaxed, other virtual worlds does not permit the same degree of artistic freedom.

Other virtual worlds are kinda useless for a developer, they are just there for you to kill time if there is no commercial activities.

You know me.  If I hear about a virtual world (old or new), or a social VR platform, I'll visit it at least once to write a brief report for my blog. But I won't bother with most of the world's in Napoleon's list. I'm more focused on the newer virtual worlds, particularly ones that support VR and the blockchain/cryptocurrency-based ones. Most of the latter are little more than vapourware and empty promises, but at least one (Virtual Universe) shows some promise.

  • 1 year later...

Which ever one I’m in at the moment, because I’m happy doing whatever it is I’m doing there. Nine times out of 10 that is second life. But that’s today…

for me they are a medium, not a means to an end in themselves. So it’s what I can do there, not what it is that is important to me. Some days that changes and I want something that a virtual world was not even designed to do. That’s also why I’m not really upset when someone calls a virtual world either a game or a platform… I called them all a medium.

What is your preferred virtual world and why? Explain what you like about a certain virtual world compared to others. Explain what you dislike about your chosen virtual world.

What is your opinion on the following virtual worlds below?

IMVU - Not really interested. More of a sandboxed environment than a virtual world.

Second Life - The only true virtual world with enough people to make it worth anything, in my opinion. Which is unfortunate - Linden Lab needs competition badly.

Woozworld - never tried it, to be fair. Looks like a teen oriented, more cartoonish version of IMVU

Habbo - Teen oriented and so not for me

Twinity Don't know it.

SmallWorlds Never heard of it

OurWorld Never heard of it

Fantage Never heard of it

Stardoll Never heard of it

Neopets Never heard of it

World of Warcraft - WoW is a game. A terrific one, but a game and not a virtual world

Poptropica Never heard of it

Club Penguin Never heard of it

Moshi Monsters Never heard of it

WeeWorld Never heard of it

Webkinz Never heard of it

Meez Never heard of it

Minecraft A game and not a virtual world

Roblox A gaming platform for kids and not a virtual world that I have any interest in

Hello Empereur Napoleon Bonaparte,

Try Wurm perhaps?
https://www.wurmonline.com/

I'd never seen it before until recently.
Personally I'm still obsessed with a certain "Medieval Village" game myself.

One part of SL should have formal/LL sanctioned professions and guilds. (NOT obligatory).
Clothes should wear out so you have to buy new ones. (=amount of times worn-or something)
If only there were LL governed professions & politics. (NOT obligatory).
An in-world alternative to player made/scripted stuff.

Other Wirtual Vorlds have everything else except the base world.
SL has the wonderful  base world with not much else.

One had better pull its pixel finger out pretty soon - lol.

Second Life is my preferred world, although I do like admiring some of my avatars in IMVU. Sometimes I chat there. I like how big Second Life is and how you can really express you creative side, too. I also like how everything seems connected in SL. What I don't like is stuff like slow rez (loading) of objects and any technical limitations on avatar possibility. IMVU also has a lot of stuff but you can't really walk around in that application, the scope is more limited than in SL and it suffers from slow loading too.

Aside from Second Life and IMVU, I have also been in Gaia Online, OurWorld, Woozworld, Highrise, among some others I'm forgetting. They're all cool but their scope is much more limited compared to what you can do in both Second Life and IMVU. I've also played several MMORPGs like Maple Story and Dragon Raja with big worlds and a lot of character customization but they don't offer as much options as SL and IMVU.

I've tried several different virtual platforms, Yo-ville, Smallworlds, BUildabearville when I was a kid, CLub Penguin, IMVY, Habbo Hotel, War Bears ( Another one I used as a kid) But ever since i started getting on SL, I havent really tried any others sense because none even compare. I tried Sinescape for about 2 days, because it as Elements that are very similar to SL but that didn't even stick
