Is that a place? Also I have no clue how to play these casino games anyways.

Virtual Private Network, it's a tool through which you route your connection to mask your online activity, among other things. It's often used by people who wish to access content that has been regionally disabled (or regional-specifically enabled) such as certain YouTube content, news media and such - as well as by pirates who don't want the caught by the authorities. It may sound dodgy, but, it really isn't; a lot of people have them without doing anything shady online. And as far as I know, they're entirely legal even in 'the land of the free'.

Simply using a VPN is no guarantee of protection .. although really I'd be more worried about extra secret payloads gifting ownership of your PC to botnet

Depends a bit on the service provider. My VPN provider is extremely good, and their 24/7 support service is excellent. I'd give them 11/10 any day. But they also do cost a small fortune.

If you're looking into getting a VPN, do your market research. Don't just google 'cheap VPN' and expect that the $0.99/month service will be anything like the $20/month ones - but keep in mind that considering how little the average person knows about 'what they do', expensive ones aren't necessarily good ones. Look into reviews by nerdy tech blogs and articles.

The name says it all.

Virtual Private Network.

What does virtual mean?
What about private?
So what is "virtually private" anyway?

It means some else's network owns everything you do.

I am a firm believer in keeping a healthy level of paranoia when dealing with anything digital.  Do your homework, shop around, ask advice and always remember that There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch.

They are. I believe the original purpose was to have a way for organizations—businesses, for example—to create a private data channel while making use of the (very public) internet. Prior to that, phone lines (and modems, etc.) were the go-to method.

Rhonda,

They aren't "virtually private".  A VPN is a "virtual" network...a network created in software, instead of a network defined by servers, computers, and ethernet cables.  And it is a "private" network.

Think of it this way...your local home network is a private network.  The computers on it cannot be seen directly by anything outside it.  All the internet sees is your "public" IP address.  When a packet of information gets sent to you, it's sent to that public address, and then your own private network takes over and routes it to the correct computer in your home.  A VPN acts the same way, making your home network hidden from outsiders.  You can then send and receive information privately between others who are members of the VPN.  In addition, a VPN user is kept anonymous from people outside the VPN in much the same way as your PC's address is kept hidden from people outside your home network.

That said, I don't like VPNs and don't use 'em.  Both because they cost money, and because they cause a performance hit.  I do consider going to one now and then, when I suffer from a bout of intermittent paranoia.

hello!

I am always looking for new friends.  I used to enjoy the fish hunt, until the ATM stole almost 300L from me and I haven't done it since, but I'm always down to start back up again.  I have been very interested in the DFS games, but I haven't been able to find a whole lot of useful info on it.

I enjoy shopping and going to clubs to dace.  I love SL photography and always looking on ways to better myself and improve at it.  I do voice at times as well. My group of friends is super small, so no real drama there :)

I am on SL everyday around 5:30 pm slt (give or take a few mins lol)

Tamikinss resident (Tami) in world :)

I used to play those gold hunting games where I collected coins until I saved up for an outfit for a male avatar. After I bought that one outfit, I stopped playing the coin games since I don’t have some uses for them right now. I don’t have anything I want to buy in Second Life so far, for I do not care much about virtual items. Learning that you have a mic, now I am so curious about how it will end up when we voice chat together. I rarely use it, so I may feel awkward. You will hear a female’s voice because that’s how I was born in real life even though I have a very masculine personality.

I would like to hear your aspects about Second Life. I’m still considered a newbie since I never go on here on a daily bases. I’m still not experienced in this video game.

I, indeed, am one of those people who tend to post and check on my posts and my friends regularly. You’ll expect me to go online very often as long as I’m not too busy with college.

guy, one outfit, yep that sounds about right

You made me laugh right there. Actually, I’m probably the opposite. I just like saving money. That’s why I only have one outfit, so I could get a Napoleonic bicorn. The other outfits are just historical freebies. I don’t spend a crazy amount of money on 1,000 outfits because I don’t have any uses for them.
