Hi I have bee struggling uploading sound to SL for some time. I have used Audacity and another program both give same results very quiet sound  in windows but really quiet in sl. I have looked at forums and tried duplicating sounds in gestures but this is not much better another website told  me to download cakewalk pyro 1.5 which just seems to be a virus to my antivirus software. My sounds are right up but I know some gestures can make sounds louder so why cannot the sounds i upload . I have wasted so much money uploading sounds which dont work the beta grid is offline and of no use to test now . Does anyone have any advise how to make the sounds louder without clipping them  or making them distort please. This should be simple exercise but no one in world can help me resolve it ?

Thank you for looking Denise x

Use "Normalize" from the effect menu in Audacity. That will change the volume for the entire track such that the loudest passage is 1dB below clipping. You needn't worry about clipping, it won't happen. If that doesn't solve your problem, you may have the volume set too low in your player script. If the volume isn't set to 1.0, make it 1.0.

Oh, thanks. I'd been using "Amplify" in Audacity, but "Normalize" is better.

Actually, do both. First, run normalize - this helps amplify lower-volume areas to match higher-volume areas. The run your Amplify filter to get the entire wave the loudest you are able. Since SL only takes lower-quality sound files it's okay to allow for clipping as long as the sound is still clear and doesn't sound too over-driven.

It's important to get the sound as loud as you can (without too much distortion) BEFORE uploading it to SL.  Once it's uploaded, the loudest volume you can play it at is 1.0...you can't increase it, only decrease it.

The only other way to change the sound's volume is with your audio slider, and that's unique to every person who listens.
