Hey everyone, I have been on Second Life for 3 weeks and I'm in love with the damn thing. Although there's one issue. I want to be successful and shoot high. I want to learn and start earning lindens in any way possible I can.

Let's start by stating my RL talents and skills. I am a very good singer. I used to sing on stage at charity events just because I loved to do it. And felt confident doing so. I used to do sound and DJ IRL for live events, (Charity work and For an example a huge event in Montana called Rockin the Rivers) I am very skilled in anything music. You see I grew up in a very musical and ambitious family. I stream video games at the moment and have been told I am very positive and very entertaining. I am very good at Video Angles and Lighting. Also have grew up playing video games and am very Tech Savvy. I pick up things fast. I am very persuasive and a have a great skill at writing. I adapt well, and am also very good at speech.

I want to know everything and anything from the basics of Building, to Even the advanced of scripting, creating. I have been trying to find youtube videos to try and find out out to Create, Resell and everything in between. The problem is there are very little. I am very willing to learn and I need your help.

About 2 weeks into SL I got a job as a dancer/escort and sometimes host at a club. (Yes very quickly I know) But that's just me, I'm ambitious. Problem is I barely make anything and Dancing/Escorting is not really my thing. I want to do something I may enjoy. Like for example Photography. I know nothing about photo shop or even have it. Although I would love to learn about how to actually do something. I have a lot of time on my hands IRL and I want to make something out of it.

Now I have a full Maitreya body mesh, face mesh and an AO. I own 2 properties and I have quite a few selection of outfits. I caught on to the whole alpha's and how to change clothes pretty fast.

I am looking for someone who can kind of guide me into the world of SL. Someone who can possibly teach me something that will make me of some value. I want to know what makes the best amount of money and just go by that. I want to try and resell other peoples creations. Because I have no skill in creating at all. I tried a few times in IMVU and tried making a tattoo and a shirt in Sl. Didn't go so well. I'm looking for someone who can educate me in this world that feels so real to me. I know there are schools InWorld but I just can't learn that way. Plus I'm not much of a role player. I want to do the real stuff.

If you feel you could be of any help to me, and have a skill in pretty much anything in SL I'd be willing to pay in L$. I'll be InWorld and also will be checking the forums very frequently.

Even if you have questions or comments regarding anything I have said on this forum I'd be more than happy to answer.

First thing, relax, take your time, and enjoy your life in SL. There is no magic formula for getting rich here. Even those with special talents have to invest a lot of time and/or money over a long period before they build up a reputation and start to earn a little pocketmoney. You say you are a good singer - then concentrate on that; forget creating and sexy dancing. You have two properties? Develop one into a music venue, put on regular gigs, advertise them, and hope people will turn up and tip you a few lindens without you annoying them about it. Or check popular music venues and see if they will give you a regular gig. But they key thing is to enjoy what you do even if you're making no money at all.

Thank you for your input. And I understand things take time. I've invested money to get where I am now. I would love to share my talents. But there's always this "You're too young thing" And I'm not sure how to go about the gigging thing. Do I sing Karaoke? I don't know how to play an instrument. What genre do I sing. What would a music venue like to see from me. Or hear from me in applications. I have all these questions unanswered.

You just pop open your microphone channel and put some music into it... sing or play an instrument. A lot of places will want you to connect to a streaming channel for that but I have been to some small events that did only use the SL voice service (that microphone chat thing) genre is up to you and the place you perform at to agree upon. In the unlikely event you can persuade a Death Metal club owner to do a French Chanson night ... then chansons it is. ;)

You can do all kinds of silly stuff. Right now one place I know has a prim sandcastle building contest. Often shops will do photo contests. If you go through SL with open eyes you will discover so much you can do. Creating (or at least tinkering) can be great joy. Here are some places that will do courses on building and/or scripting you can attend usually freely:

https://secondlife.com/destination/caledon

https://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Builders Brewery/63/54/23

https://secondlife.com/destination/happy-hippo-building-school

https://secondlife.com/destination/firestorm-support-region

Caledon and Firestorm will also almost always have friendly helpers around to ask questions or just have an educated chat with.

Photoshop costs money, there is also GIMP (a free photoshop alternative) I am pretty sure someone in SL does courses on GIMP... (and many contests have also a no postprocessing category so no photoshopping allowed in those anyways)

PS: Welcome to SL by the way

Put the goal of becoming rich in SL out of your head and take your time discovering SL. In order of importance, only commit to things that:

1. You enjoy doing

2.You have talent for

3. People like or need

It may take years to find out these things. It may take years to develop and perfect your skills. (If you're lucky, it may take less.)

Thank you for expressing this. It’s not much about money I just want to learn. So you’re right I should get it out of my mind and discover it.

I have close to zero personal experience doing the things you mentioned, but I can't resist adding my usual piece of advice on questions like this. Google (or your preferred search engine) is your friend. The pic is just the top of the page I just got with that extremely dumb-looking query. The whole page was nothing but links on the same subject. There were links to YT there, also, if you like those. Personally I much prefer text when I'm trying to learn something.

ps: Look for the links with the most recent dates; SL's ways of doing things change.

Let's start by stating my RL talents and skills. I am a very good singer.

How a bout becoming a 'singing escort'? I've never heard of such a thing so it might go down well. I knew one girl who was making L$10,000 a day as an escort, and she wasn't singing. Just think what can be made as a singing escort :D

j/k of course.

Creating stuff: There was a time when everyone who wanted to could create things inworld, and sell them. Some of us made a lot of money doing that. But now there isn't much of a market for things that are not mesh. Mesh is made outside of SL, and making good mesh things takes a lot of time and practise.

Scripting: Scripting is programming and can only be done by programmers. There is one person I know here in the forum who learned to programme here in SL, who now does it as her RL job. Programming in LSL (SL's programming language) can be learned by pretty much anyone here but, again, it takes a lot of time to become a decent programmer. Fiddling with existing scripts can be done much more quickly and easily, and that's what many people do when they want to add some scripted functionality to the objects they've made.

I can't offer anything to you other than agree with what's already been said. It sounds like you really enjoy singing and that's not difficult to do in SL, but, without an instrument, like a guitar or piano, you'll need backing tracks. To me, it sounds like that's a good path to follow. It'll take a little time getting it together so that you can broadcast you singing to backing tracks, but it's a doable aim. If you aim at that, you could easily notice something else along the way that you'd prefer.

I would happily offer some advice/guidance inworld regarding scripting and can answer pretty much any questions you might come up with, but if you've never written a line of code before, I can promise it will be a headache to get started as you're literally learning an entirely new language with it's own vocabulary and grammar.

You'll be deep in the instruction manual most of the time, as is typical for any programming language.

Thank you for mentioning anything. Any kind of advice helps and I’m extremely happy with the advice I’m getting. I have watched videos on dancing and emoting but I realized that’s not my thing. I will be googling more information on different things to see which path I choose. Already went to some venues earlier to start doing open mic and stuffs. Any comment is very much appreciated.

Like I said before I have a lot of time on my hands and will be googling SLS and maybe getting in touch with some scripters for some help and tips if I see it fits. I have had some experience in scripting in things like Minecraft, and creating a website in a high school class once and know that every thing has a different language. As for the singing I’m not sure how to do a backup track. I usually just search “song, artist karaoke” on YouTube and just sing off of that. I have made actual recording before but this was when I was very young. I’m looking into doing it again irl.

Again thank you for the layout and the advice it is much appreciated. I’m someone who had anticipation to learn, and well second life is very vast in that area and I like it. Thanks again.

I have written lines of code but not in second life. I had a programming class in high school and made a website in there. Also have made many Minecraft servers before in my early teenage years. If you have any sites I should try and explore that explains SLS please share. I am willing to learn and absorb any amount of information I can.

Thank you for your comment any advice is appreciated. I will probably be hitting you up InWorld.

Don't google SLS - try LSL instead ;)

You wouldn't make backing tracks yourself. You'd buy or acquire ready-made ones, including karoake tracks.

You can learn scripting, and Wulfie's is a great offer, but before you get too far down the line with it, think about why you are learning it. On its own, scripts are no good because they don't do anything. They are used to add functionality to objects. To make use of a scripting ability, you would either need objects, which you could make yourself with prims or acquire mesh ones, or do scripting jobs for people who want functionality for their objects. Writing scrips for other people would be quite a way down the line.

I don't want to put you off, and I suggest getting started with Wulfie. As you're doing it, you'll come to understand how scripts are used, and whether or not you could use them for anything. One thing you can definitely use them for is adding functionality to your own self-made prim objects, and that in itself is an enjoyable success.

There's another thing you might fancy doing - creating animations. Learning that is much quicker, and the animations would be saleable pretty much from the start. Animations and scripting go together, and the scripts to make use of animations is relatively simple.

I definitely agree with the vast majority of this. While there are some things you can do entirely with scripts alone with nothing but a basic prim holding it, in most cases you'll want other things -- objects, textures, sounds, and animations -- to make it all nice and appealing to make money off of. You could of course make all of that yourself but you might as well buy some assets or work with someone. (Doing everything yourself is possible but it's not efficient if your goal is making money by selling stuff!)

I can speak from experience that working with someone and splitting the profit in some way is by far the easiest and fastest way to start growing an income, even if it's barely anything at first or just enough to help updating your avatar.

Any start is a good start, though HTML (and CSS?) aren't very similar to LSL ("Linden Scripting Language"). I'm unsure about what was involved with setting up a Minecraft server back then, but I doubt you needed to write any code aside from configuration files.

This page, while old, still points to useful tutorials that aren't particularly out of date. (They might not mention the latest features, but those aren't really relevant and you shouldn't even bother with those until you have the basics down, which those tutorials definitely cover.) That wiki is going to be your friend when trying to figure out how to use new functions too.

@Wulfie Reanimator

Even when a basic prim merely holds a script, the script adds functionality to the prim; e.g. a visitor counter.

I noticed the OP say that she built a website, and I thought HTML, knowing that HTML is a set of codes and not a programming language, as is CSS, but there are some backend programming languages, such as ASP, PHP, and Perl, so it depends on what the OP used for the website. Still, even if she hasn't yet typed the first character of a programme, learning to write scripts will bring a lot of pleasure and satisfaction for the OP. And causing the colour to change on the face of a prim will bring her untold joy :D

Thank you for putting so much work into this post. I am looking to learn scripting because honestly I liked it in high school, and I just like working with that stuff. I also want the experience and the knowledge so it can possibly help me in rl also. I’m young so anything I can put my time to like scripting, animations is not a waste of time. And I am so tired of feeling like I’ve wasted my time. Thanks again. Will be taking up Wulfies offer.

Thank you for providing a link to the wiki and being willing to help me during the process. I will be looking at this wiki page and browsing the LSL forums to see if I can get a little taste of what it’s all about and used for. To see what is important.

Also do I start by making a basic prim in world and start the scripting process from there? To learn? I know this is probably in the wiki but I’m by no means a builder in SL at all.

We'll get into more detail with that later, but essentially yes. The process is explained in the Getting started with LSL tutorial. Eventually you will necessarily have to learn the ins-and-outs of the build tools and terminology as well, because when you're writing a script, you'll almost always need to be able to find out very specific details of the objects you're scripting.

In my experience, creating and selling was more enjoyable than working in-world. Some people are social butterflies or natural performers so earning lindens in a club or stage might be more enjoyable.

If you want to go the merchant route I'd suggest you get familiar with all things being sold in SL. If you find some product range you really like and think, "I wish it had this feature... or... I could make this better" then you can focus on learning specific skills to bring that product into SL.

Okay thanks. That’s all my questions for now. I have some rl stuff to attend to but I’ll be looking into the wiki and seeing what I can do. Thanks again for your attentiveness and I’ll be messaging you inworld here soon.

I currently work at a strip club. It’s not really my thing and yes I would like to be a merchant. But I have no idea how to create whatsoever, like I have gimp and tried the templates and stuff but really I think creating is not going to be an option for me. As in reselling I know I need to find things that can be transferable, modified, and copied. But I just don’t know how to get started with the reselling thing. Advertising and trafficking I can do no problems. This is a comment that I will focus on more when I have more knowledge on SL. When I’m more advanced. Thank you for your comment.

I would recommend going along to helping haven. You can learn, teach and meet others trying to do the same sorts of things. The people there I know are all very welcoming and helpful, happy to share their skills, knowledge, contacts and enthusiasm with others. You will get guidance for example and opportunities to explore singing to audiences, software to use, how to make a tip jar you may well find musicians to sing with too.
