Suzy Hoof
I sent a merchant of one of online stores Lindens one month ago for products he said that he'd make and haven't heard a word. Do I have any recourse through SL or am I out the Lindens?

Rolig Loon
It's one of the risks you take in SL, where there is no such thing as a binding contract between residents. We make agreements based on trust and they usually work out because most people have good intentions. When you are entering into agreements that involve large amounts of L$, though, it's wise to limit your potential loss by making a partial payment up front and paying the rest on completion of the work. That's what many creators who make custom creations will expect, too, since they want to limit their own risk. I have found that most creators and merchants I know will bend over backwards to keep a good reputation with their clients and customers. There is very little advertizing in SL, so word of mouth can be even more important than in RL. I recommend being patient and polite as long as you can. SL creators and merchants have real lives, real families, and real jobs that take priority. They also have real accidents and illnesses, family emergencies, and unexpected computer failures. You may have actually given your money to a dishonest person, but I recommend assuming that your merchant/creator is trying to live up to his end of the bargain but is dealing with his own crises. It may not be true, but it will calm some of your anxiety. Besides, as Cindy said, you don't have much choice.
iamyourneighbour
My take is that your lindens are gone and you got conned. Next time ask for a PayPal invoice instead. Imo lindens are more stable than quite a few of the currencies around the world always floating at 250:1 with US dollars. If you are paying over 2500 for custom job I say request for an invoice and pay in real dollars. Plus you get the other party's detail and if you need to take them to small claims court it is easier than putting subpoena on Linden Lab.
