Converting Homestead sim to Full sim

Question

If you initially buy a private island as a homestead, can you later convert it to a full sim? Or would you have to abandon or sell it and start over? I guess that leads to another question. Can you sell a private island to another SL user? Actually, that brings up yet another question. It looks like you have to already own a full region before you can buy a homestead. Is this right?

AFAIK, you cannot convert a Homestead region to a Full Region because it would need to be moved to different servers.

Yes, you can certainly sell a private region/estate to another resident directly.  That's how I bought mine.

And yes, you need to own a full region before you are allowed to buy a Homestead region.  Anyone may rent a Homestead region, of course.

Yes, you can sell a private region to another resident.  The technical term used for this is not "sell", but TRANSFER the region.

There is a forum where people advertise these: https://community.secondlife.com/forums/forum/284-regions-for-sale-full-private-island/

There is also a specific procedure to use.  DO NOT pay the seller directly.  Instead, see the details here: https://community.secondlife.com/knowledgebase/english/managing-private-regions-r50/#Section_5

There are a couple of fine points:

  • You can transfer a Homestead region to a new owner, but that resident must already own at least one full private region
  • You can transfer a region with "grandfathered" tier rates.  Normally, a full private region costs $249 USD per month, but grandfathered regions only cost $195 per month.  Transferring the grandfathered status requires the payment of an additional one-time fee of $600 USD.
  • You can relocate a region to another place on the grid, and/or change its name at the time of transfer.  There are certain restrictions on where you can relocate it...it cannot go next to someone else's region unless they agree to that in advance.

It is also very common for estate owners to lease out an entire region, either a full region or a Homestead region.  This is not the same as a transfer.  In this case, the buyer will pay tier, either weekly or monthly, in $L, to the estate owner.  By doing it this way, it is possible for a resident who owns no other regions to "own" (rent, actually) a Homestead region.
