The problem with dance pads is indeed that most of the avatars are floating in the air. Only the very tallest avatars will have their feet on the floor, or close to it.

When I go to a club, I usually try out the singles dance intan. If there's any dances  I like, I use it, otherwise I use my dance hud.

Line dances are fun, assuming it isn't a dance from 2007. As for being two feet above the ground, it's easy enough to adjust your hover
