Right now, five of the "most popular" sims listed under "Destinations" are "skill gaming regions."

An entire sim of slot machines. "Skill gaming". Yeah, right.

Two floors of gambling machines. You can play Solitare for money here. L$150 per game.

3 entire sims of slot machines. Two for the general public, and a more exclusive area for high rollers.

Is this the future of SL?

Not everyone advertises through or uses Destinations.

Regions full of casino game machines have been around for over a decade. Its just one of many business models in SL.

And yet your investigative journalist report on this "top destinations" seems to show exactly NO PEOPLE...

This should be a hint...

Here is another, from the "Dictionary of SL"

"Destination Guide - A pointless waste of space in which clueless individuals list places nobody cares about (usually experimental conceptual art installations, empty premium sandboxes, and gambling dens), only believed to be relevant by equally clueless noobs"

The problem with the destination guide isn't the idea or it's content. It's how that content is offered in the viewer.

Yes, it does. A big one. It used to be a fun beach sim, with clubs, tree houses, jet skis... Now it looks grim.

So: make a good looking public region, get it listed in Destinations, rebuild the sim as a money making machine. It should work in the sense that LL isn't likely to find out and delist the place but not in the sense that you are likely to make much money from it.

That's certainly a problem, yes, but not the only one.

The Destination Guide is certainly an effective newcomer repellant but it seems a bit superluous. SL has plenty of other mechanisms to get rid of new users.

Theresa Tennyson gets her counting jones on.

In other words, 28 others shown in the same list aren't.

Did you derender all avatars or why isn't there a single being (besides you) at those "top destinations"?

He may have or he may simply have chosen a camara postion that didn't show any avatars - that would be easy enough.

In any case, it was the right thing to do. The number of visitors was not Animat's point so there was no need to risk exposing people who may not have wanted to be in the picture.

The "What's Hot Now" places will always have around 20 avatars. If they have much more or much less, they'll drop out of the list.

Well that may be the THEORY but I have seen oh so many zeros in those listing oh so many times --- and during the busiest time of the day. So not sure what is (and has been for years) going on there. There ARE places that are busy. Mostly though no ones SL would like to highlight *wink*.

The ones I listed all had at least 20 avatars in Destinations. When I went there, they had a dozen or so each. Some are casino staff hanging in the air, watching. So I didn't take pictures of the customers.

Yes but they changed that about a year ago, shortly after the last time we made fun of them here in the forums. Any region with too few or too many avatars in it is now automatically removed from the list.

It's a different matter with the other splash screen lists taken from the Destination guide though. Looking at the Firestorm screen now...

20 listing in "Destinations". Five of them have 11, 8, 8, 4 and 3 people respectively. The others are empty.

Official viewer:

Featured events is the same as FIrestorm's Destinations list

Editors picks: 11 listings with 3-15 avatars, 14 listings with nobody.

That's about what you'd expect. The avatar count used by the "What's hot" filter isn't necessarily completely up too date and as for bots staff, you don't get to stay on the list unless you make sure the total number is in the right range at any given time.
