Names for resident generations?

You know how in real life they have names for various generations: the silent generation, the baby boomers, generation X, the millenials, and so on.

Has anyone made the same thing for secondlife avatar generations?

What would you name them, which avatars would they cover, and why?

The 2004-2006 are oldtimers, to me. They are often in system clothing and the same look as 15 years ago.

Lastnamers, I think is Kly's term for the 2006-2010'ers.

Not sure of the residents, I think they can be split into 2 waves though.

I actually answered this question before, last year?

  • 1st Wave Lastnamers - The Original settlers who treked across the pack ice to the Original Sim, following Chief Phil, where they built a hill fort, with logs cut from LL Trees using handaxes knapped from flint prims... They came because they believed in Phils dream. 2003 - 2006
  • 2nd Wave Lastnamers - The Mass migration of the Entitlement Generation, arrived in droves, because they had heard that you could get RL rich JUST by logging into an "online game", with no need for skill, talent, ideas, investment capital or brains. Origin of the medical term "2nd Wave Lastnamer entitlement Syndrome" where people whine like babies because LL won't change the whole Grid to guarantee their whiners RIGHT to "FREE MONEY" just for logging in. 2006 - 2009
  • 3rd Wave Lastnamers - The people who came here for FUN, and who stayed despite the hordes of 2nd Wavers passing them in the other direction screaming "Land for less than L$8/sqm! All is lost FLEE!". 2009-2011
  • Rise of the Resident - Singlenamers who came, and stayed despite the tail end of the 2nd wave still screaming about everything being over, and in spite of being treated like scum by the 2nd & 3rd Wavers who wanted an easy target for the traditional "piss down hill" response to the treatment they had received from the 1st Wavers. 2011 - 2018
  • [name to be determined] - The people who'll join after the new "Revenge of the Lastnamers" cash-cow feature goes into effect later this year. 2018 - ????

Interestingly enough,  all of your categories are based on whether or not someone has a value other than 10327 in the "last name" field of their account name.

Myself,I'm from the,Super Premium Excalibur Account of Awesomeness,Generation..

There was a really short period of time where our generation existed.. Some of us had more awesomeness than the others and many died off from having so much in one place..

Finally one day, there was only one left that could handle all the , Super Premium Excalibur Account of Awesomeness..

The rest is history..

:D

Correction: there are two of us left ;)

I've been hiding my awsomeness under a bushell - and it's been hellish trying to get off of me - it's so darned heavy.

There were actually quite a few of us that came in the early part of that period simply because we saw all the press on it and thought it simply sounded like a fun place to spend some time.  I came in early 2007 and yet never had any dreams of making any money.  I couldn't seem to get interested in any of the other online virtual things going on at the time, but SL seemed interesting to me.  I met a lot of people during that time that were here for the same reason that I was -- just to have fun.

All generalisations are... General...

Sure there were fun seekers in the 2nd Wave, just as there were "entitled to free money for logging in" fools in the other bands...

Hell, remember last summer? when we had that self proclaimed "serial entrepeneur" who claimed after being here a week, that he felt it would be easy for somebody with his "business skills" to turn a $10 investment into a $400 a day cashout in a couple of weeks, then announced that his plan was to persuade a skill gaming operator to GIVE him a 50% share in their casino, so he could add a dining room with a glitzy Vegas style show...

But look at the famous "SL is dying" population graph, and average land prices from gridsurvey, and you can SEE the first 3 bands, with the 2nd Wave being that MASSIVE spike with the double peak, and the MASSIVE drop off when land prices fell below an average of L$8/sqm, tail end of 2008.

You can see the slow and low levels of take up in the 1st Wave, then the surge as the SL Gold Rush got triggered by news of people getting RL rich off virtual property speculation, the outgoing exodus as land prices fell and the goldrushers realised they were never going to get RL rich, and the  tail off into the 3rd wave, where a higher percentage of those who stayed were fun seekers because the worst no-talent cash seekers got scared off by the outgoing 2nd wave doom merchants.

Generalisations are general, but that doesn't always mean "wrong", such is the nature of statistics

Maybe we shoud give the one generation Klytyna gave a positive name - oh wonder her own are the proud rebels - a negative connotation as well. Let's call her generation the "lastname envy" generation...

Well said, although I, like LitteMe, came in early 2007 with no thought of making money or owning land.  In fact, I think I was probably naive enough at the time not to realize that either was possible until I had been in world for a month or two.  I came here on a dare because a friend told me that SL was the next wave for education on line.  I doubted that (and was right), but had to see for myself.  Then I fell in with a rowdy crowd of bookish types, began scripting, and started the downhill slide to what I have become today.

I think 2015-2018 should be regarded as a separate generation called "the Alts".

I'm in that 2nd wave of lastnamers, but did not come here to make money,  so not all of us are doing that and not asking LL for anything nor do I feel entitled to do so.  2007
