There is a popular expression in SL: I do things in SL that I want to do in RL but can't. So they dress like *****s in SL because that's how they wish to dress in RL. But why do you want to look like a ***** in RL??? Are you a wanna be prostitute?? What's wrong with people.

Ohhh...thats one for me! I got coffee and cake, so here we go...

Most people mean various things by that statement. Actities behond their physcial, real life abilites, owning that expensive house with the ocean view or being a beautiful 20-something for all of ethernity. And yes, some also mean fashion by that statement. I would love to have a wardrobe like my avatar. But neither can I afford this, nor is everything in it practical. I can't wear shoes like she does. My feet would be dead after an hour. And most of her clothes are not practical at all or would be way too expensive. Are many of her clothes sexy? Yes they are! Does she look like a prostitute? No, not if I don't intend it. Not all sexy clothes look like the working clothes of a prostitute.

Dressing sexy does not equal looking like a prostitute. Dressing sexy does not indicate the person doing it wants to be a prostitute. And I would even go as far as saying that even those that work as escorts in SL would like to be a real life one.

Not everyone who dresses their avatar like a ***** wants to be a *****. Sometimes people just like the look, and that's all there is to it. I dress my avatar up in the skimpest of clothes because it looks good. I draw characters in skimpy costumes because I like how it looks. I enjoy looking at skimpy cosplace because again; I like how it looks.
Do I want to be ***** in rl because of that? No. I just want the freedom to be able to like what I like without being judged for it.

Also, from all the things you can do in sl, your choice of clothing is the one that get's that weird expression?
I can fly in SL, do I want to fly in RL? No, I don't. I'm terrified of heights, I'd not even try it because I'd worry it could stop mid flight.

I can be a anthropormoric cat in SL. Do I want to be one in RL?`No. While I do love cats in all shapes and sizes, I don't want to have fur, because come on, I sleep with open windows in the midst of winter because I get to hot.

I can eat cake all day in SL, and can't in RL, because I don't have the metabolism to pull that off. Would I want to? No. When I was younger, my mother made pork chops every day for a week. To this day, I hate pork-chops. Moderation is a good thing.

I think that those who say "I just like the clothes but don't wanna be a prostitute" really need to question themselves why they want to wear *****ty clothes in SL. Maybe there is something they don't understand about themselves or some hidden desire they are desperately trying to hide in RL but let out in SL because they are too ashamed of it in RL. I am not judging people who want to have a fancy house in SL or wear heels, nothing wrong with that. My focus is on people who dress avis in very revealing clothes, like a skirt that looks like a scarf and a top that only covers nipples and stuff like that. And I wouldn't want to be dressed in clothes like that in RL even if they were affordable and easy to wear.

Yeah, you're in no position to question my introspection. Apparently, you don't accept any reason other than your own, that says a lot.

But you understand that? Better than the people themself, who wear sexy clothes? Maybe...just maybe, their answers are just all that is to it. Why should they be the ones that don't truely know what they are doing, while everyone else who dresses up in a different style certainly knows 100% their own motives for dressing up? I mean...you could turn that whole argument around and say people who are covered in virtual fabric from from the neck down to their toes have body image issues, they simply don't know it yet. But that would be rude.

I could also go on now and explain why dressing in revealing clothes is not the same as having sex with someone for money. Or how jumping on a poseball and emoting does not equal being willing to have physical sex with a stranger in real life...but that would get a little to far right now. My point is sexy clothes =/= prostitute.

Or they just know, that in RL this type of clothes doesn't fit the body they have and that it isn't practical to wear and does not fit their life. Or they don't even have the desire to wear those clothes in RL at all. There really is a gap between "I'm doing that with my avatar" and "I'm doing that in RL" and thats not just about clothes.

Yes, I did notice who and what you were judgeing. I threw in those other things as an example for what other type of stuff can fall under the quote you refered to earlier ( I do things in SL that I want to do in RL but can't.) Now of course it begs the question why it is wrong to dress in revealing clothes in Second Life.

You should focus on yourself and leave the rest. It will make you (and us) much happier.

In psychology the concepts of projection and transference are significant tools in determining why people do what they do. New age religions are big on teaching about projection. They typically call it 'mirroring' or something similar. Their point is to create harmony and reduce judgement, bias, and prejudice by helping people to understand human nature and how the mind works.

So, when you come on adamant that you know what others want, it tells us a lot about you. No one can know what another person thinks. Those that feel they can are projecting what they would think in a similar situation or when exhibiting similar behavior.

So... it might be wise for you to examine why you are thinking you know these people really want to be s---s, prostitutes, and promiscuous iRL.

It was plum cake. One piece. You can still come over, but I could only offer more coffee.

From quick observation, it doesn't seem to be a throw-away alt. And sometimes people walk into the forum and their first action is to jump right into a topic, that triggers them on a deep level.

What would you say about people who like to gamble in Second Life? Would you say that they're reckless and irresponsible, and shouldn't be put in a position of trust?

I think a more interesting question is: Why don't people dress sexier in real life (RL)? A reason for that might be that people are too afraid to. They don't want people thinking of them as, or calling them, a ***** for having the guts to wear something sexy. Also, people are less likely to protect you from sexual harassment if you're dressed provocatively in RL, because some people are stupid enough to think you're asking for it. Some people might also be ashamed or worried about their bodies in RL, too.

As for me, I tend to dress sexy in Second Life because it makes me feel sexy. Also, I like showing off my avatar and all the hard work I put into her. Though sexy is a relative concept as many things could be considered sexy. Take men in suits, for instance, or even women who are dressed more sharply. Why do you think the who schoolgirl look is somewhat popular?

That being said, I don't really have much unwanted attention from people. If you don't want someone bugging you in some way, you just have to ask nicely and they'll generally leave you be.

I’m a little dubious when someone says “sexy”clothes. In my experience they want to dress like a camp counselor or they just don’t know what an normal woman’s outfit looks like.

Most of the stuff that’s considered sexy in SL are things you could get from lululemon, Rainbow, Pretty Girl or fashionnova (website) in real life. Rainbow and Pretty Girl aren’t exactly high class stores they’re just average cheap clothing.

"Sexy" is subjective.  At one time,  merely glimpsing a woman's ankle or bit of leg was suggestive and forbidden. Only "fallen women" dared showed that type of thing.  "Sexy" can be a feeling.  If someone puts on something as simple as a pair of earrings, they can be "sexy".  I don't know why people get so upset because others come here to be "sexy".   Though,  I'm also one of those people that collected all the "barely there" outfits in WoW, because Night Elf. lol

I'm not sure why people automatically assume people want to be "sl**s" or "wh***s"  when they hear the line " I do things in SL that I want to do in RL but can't."  I can change my shape in SL,which is waaaaay harder than in RL.  I can change my eyecolor on a whim in SL, which I really can't in RL unless I have tons of money for contacts.  In SL, I can build a house(I really can't. 😛 ) a heck of a lot easier than is possible in RL.  I can explore other lands, fantasy and real, within seconds in SL.  To go to Paris, I'd need to get on a multi-hour flight to get there.  I can't play with dragons in RL.  In SL, I can talk to a Dutch woman about shoes, while standing in the middle of a shop, then immediately change into a "Gothic erotic" outfit, grab a couple of people, go to a different sim to a photoshoot, all within 20 minutes.  I'd never be able to do this in RL.

Edit:  Just noticed this was necrod from last year. oops. 😛

Not everyone who does SL is looking to do the things they can't in RL. SL is more than just an alternate version of RL. SL is actually a part of RL, and within RL it is entertainment. If we are watching a movie with a car chase down a busy city street we may find it all very much fun to watch, but if the same scene unfolded before us on our morning commute we would be horrified. Their is a lot of life, that SL just cannot replicate. We can't smell or taste, we have no sense of touch. I think often the exaggerated sexuality that exists in SL is a way to compensate for all that is missing. We are all really just entertainers, and everyone else is the audience. We want to stand out and be memorable.
