Hello all.

Returning resident. I used to play like 10+ years ago and I am just getting back into SL. Just created my own house. A few questions:

-what locations are hang out spots?

-I am interested in earning lots of L$. What type of jobs are possible here? Any jobs we are not allowed to do?

Thank you

Welcome back. If you click destinations in your viewer, there's suggested places/events going on and that might be a good place to start.

As for money/jobs, I think there are all sorts of jobs out there. Not sure what earns the most besides creating/selling things and dancing ^_^ Good luck!

Not looking to buy Lindens.

Regarding jobs and ways to earn Lindens, how about one on one lessons in a language or music?

In real life I am a pianist, so also looking at potentially using my real life skills in SL.

Under the right circumstances I suppose either of the two might work - but are your secondary language skills proficient enough to teach, and how will you make an offer more lucrative than the many places to learn languages and talk to other people online for mutual learning? And which languages can you offer tutorship in?

As for piano lessons in SL, musical theory perhaps, but how will you show your students the keys and help them shift their hand movements through SL?

I don't mean to shoot you down - I applaud your ideas and think them intriguing; but the problem isn't usually coming up with the business idea, but to figure out the execution.

Realistically, the most common ways to make money in SL are through commerce - creating a product to sell; Djing; Dancing/Stripping; Escorting; and Hosting at a club.

There used to be many more occupations to choose from, but the job market has dwindled tremendously over the years. I worked in the advertising/customer service field for years and also modeling for a while, but those types of jobs are few & far between and very hard to come by nowadays.

As for where to hang out - I'm still trying to figure that one out myself. Every time I take a hiatus from SL and return, all of my old landmarks are basically useless. So, I'm constantly on the search for new places where I can explore around and meet others.

I speak, write and read fluently French.

As far as piano, I teach on Skype and this gave me an idea...lol

It may be more lucrative to continue teaching via Skype, and convert that money to $L. "$15 an hour" sounds a lot better than "$4,000L an hour," even if they're more or less the same. SL doesn't have a video chat, so you'd also be asking customers to switch from one platform to another, which may not be appealing to all.

That's not to say it couldn't work, simply that your options OUTSIDE of SL for the skills you're offering are likely better than your options inside SL. Still, you can look for places and groups inworld geared toward your skills, and make the offer there. Have a general idea of your prices and availability first, and perhaps advertise your rates in your profile.

You can either play your piano at a live music venue and work for tips. You'd have to network your self, get a booking manager and become a regular entertainer at a few clubs. The more presence you have at an establishment, the more the crowd will bond with you. More bonding equals bigger tips.

Discord has become very popular with SL businesses now. You could offer your lessons via there. You can create your own free server and invite people to join. You can set up different channels, from text, voice, and text to voice when you are on voice and they reply by text. You can setup your Discord server to invite only. That way only paying students could join. You can also do video chat there as well. The connection is better than Skype. You could have an introductions channel where people say what their SL username is and some information about themselves. This is a great resource in knowing who everyone is as it can get confusing with the Discord ID usernames.

You can also network on social media websites like Flickr, Pinterest, Tumblr, Plurk, Facebook to get the word out about your business.

You can be a host for Greedy Greedy game tournaments. You get paid a wage plus tips.

You can be a sales rep for photography agencies, and earn commissions plus tips.

If you have any experience as a business consultant, you can see if anyone needs that by asking in the Classified forum section.

Just make sure you specify you are looking for paid jobs that is more than just tips if it is skills needed that are acquired from real life.

The big money is in commerce and sex, like RL.

Land is a lucrative business. But, the Lindens are working to drive down the cost of land. So that is a changing market. For some that spells opportunity. But, opportunity is a risk-reward sort of thing.

Training is definitely a business field in SL. So, there are possibilities. Figuring out market demand to predict a return on your investment, time and/or money, is difficult. Try searching on terms people might use to find your planned training. See your competition and find out what they charge. Pay attention to the paid ads that come up on the right-side of the results. If you find schedules for the training classes check out attendance.

Builders Brewery and Firestorm Viewer classes are probably the more popular classes and best attended. One-on-one training is probably more of a forum type job offer/request. There is a section in the forum for that. Check out those places and see how they are doing things and their results.

Hanging out... the where depends on personal taste. Finding where people are isn't hard. In Destinations (web or viewer) look in What's Hot Now, Chat Hot Spots. In the viewer these are listings of where avatars are now that isn't too crowded to get into. Once a busy region hits max population it falls off the list. So, popular events are seldom in the list. Lag creates anomalies in the listing. On the web it is a raw list ignoring population.

Linden Landing Hubs usually have 10 to 30 people. But, these tend to be rough places with newbies and griefers targeting newbies. I can't say definitively but it seems Linden Governance keeps a quick response time for these areas to reduce abuse. And they have a good measure of spammers advertising their 'business' to newbies.

There are various Hubs. Use search set to Place and search on Hub. These are less popular but some are busy. Most are interesting.
