Video Card Drivers help needed please

Question

Hey everyone,

I logged into SL this morning on firestorm, then I crashed, when I tried to log in again I received the following message :-

Firestorm is unable to run because your video card drivers did not install properly, are out of date, or are for unsupported hardware. Please make sure you have the latest video card drivers and even if you do have the latest , try reinstalling them. If you continue to receive this message, contact the second life support portal.

My drivers say they are up to date, and also this did not happen yesterday and worked perfectly, has anyone had this issue or know how to resolve it quickly please?

Thanks in advance

Tell us what sort of video card you have, as well as your operating system.  You can get this information at the viewer login screen.  Choose Help/About Firestorm, then copy the information.  Edit your original message and paste the info into it.

If you have Intel graphics, you may also find useful information here: http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_intel_fix_32bit

Hi Lindal,

My video card is Radeon Graphics, Processor - Intel(R) Core (TM) i3-2310M CPU @ 2.10 GHz

Memory - 8.00 GB             Windows 7

System Type - 64 bit operating system.

It is a sony vaio laptop, and it has been working with secondlife for 3 years. It was working perfectly yesterday, today I logged on SL, the screen froze I turned laptop off on button, when I tried to log back into SL that message happened " Firestorm is unable to run because your video card drivers did not install properly, are out of date, or are for unsupported hardware. Please make sure you have the latest video card drivers and even if you do have the latest , try reinstalling them. If you continue to receive this message, contact the second life support portal."

I am wondering if I have damaged my video card driver? Maybe I need a new computer :(

Thankyou for reply and any help is much appreciated.

Maybe your freeze and the hard shutdown messed with either your video drivers or your Firestorm installation.

Start here: https://support.amd.com/en-us/download  Download and install the drivers recommended for your particular system.

If that doesn't fix the problem, try a clean re-install of Firestorm.  Here are instructions for that: http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_clean_install

First up, a sanity check. Install the official client and see what happens .. PITA I know, but it will rule out firestorm being the issue.

If the same thing happens, Firestorm do offer some solid support options http://www.firestormviewer.org/support/ and might prove helpful - you can't be alone in this problem.

If you aren't manually updating your gfx card drivers , then its entirely possible that a windows update has come along and replaced your working drivers with something less than ideal for playing SL. Manually installing GFX drivers yourself is almost always preferable, i suggest you start with the Sony website and see if they offer downloads, failing that, good ole google with "<exact model of laptop> radeon drivers" might prove useful.

In a crash like yours, it is almost always the Firestorm settings file that got crunched. Video drivers are only read files. After install, they are not written to. So, mostly immune to corruption from a crash.

Try using the SL Linden viewer. If it works, then Firestorm needs some fixing. I suggest you delete the viewer's settings file and let the viewer rebuild it. The viewer should start up.
