An avatar is just like ... um ... clothing.  Many people have several in inventory for different occasions.  If you want to try a different one for free, just click the Avatar button  on your viewer screen.   There's a pretty good selection  there.  (It's also in the Library folder in your inventory.) If you want to spend some money, visit shops in world and get a huge pile of free demos to try out.  THEN buy one that captures you imagination.

Howdy, pilgrim!  (Doing her best John Wayne impersonation)

There are two ways of looking at your question.  Love and Rolig are assuming the first...that you are talking about changing your appearance.  Your avatar can be anything you can possibly imagine.  One of my friends is a velociraptor with colorful feathers.  Another often appears as a steam-powered mechanical man.  You can start by exploring the avatars in your Library, in the Library/Clothing/Iniital Outfits folder.  Then there are thousands of items of clothing, hair, and accessories available for free from many different stores, or on the Marketplace.  And literally millions of items for sale, most at reasonable prices.  Some people look pretty much the same from day to day.  Others change avatars often, even several times in the course of a conversation.

The other thing you might have meant by your question is changing your avatar name.  I think "lonepilgrim" is a pretty good name, but if you don't like it, you have two choices.

  1. You can add a Display Name.  You can change your Display Name once per week.  Others may see your Display Name, your username, or both, depending on how they've set their viewer preferences.  Click the gear icon on your Profile and choose Edit.
  2. You cannot change your username.  If you simply can't stand it, your only option is to register for Second Life again and create another account.  We call this an "alternate account", or "alt".  Many people have alts.  You can keep the original lonepilgrim account, or if you wish you can delete it, using the Account section of your Dashboard, the web page you first see when you log in to this website.
