Open Lecter to Linden Labs: the plague of AFK hangouts

Very true. Good SEO helps get more people find you in search. (If they stay and become regulars is a whole different kettle of fish).

So, the OP is also complaining people are not coming to her club, and going to the AFK places instead.

Rather than railing against AFK hoping the Lab acting will ban them, and this will give her more traffic, some decent SEO on her ad and parcel description will help raise her in search. Add to that some better marketing and promotion and she can build her numbers up.

Professional SEO got my club to first or second place in search for all the categories I wanted, and my numbers grew clearly as a result. But even with that growth-through-exposure the club still needs to entertain people to retain them.

I am addressing this lecter to anyone in the Linden Labs who could read and perhaps do something, please upvote this post if you agree!

Hello, i am the proud owner of a respected adult club in the grid, with its own remarkable traffic and visitors. A pub, to be exact, because SL is meant to be social, and what place is more social than a lively tavern?

Yet year by year, we all cannot deny that the SL populace is slowly fading, less and less people logs in and prefers going elsewhere. WHY, you may wonder?

There are several factors but let me tell you about ONE kind of factor in particular that is literally destroying the concept of meeting point: AFK Hangouts. What are they? Simple. They are places , mostly adult themed, in which one goes there mostly for sexual interactions with other people who are AFK, they just "park" their avatars there and do absolutely nothing. Yet such places have the highest traffic in many cathegories. This not only goes against what SL is meant to be, but it also discourages new people to join the community for seeing such places are taking over the grid. What is the meaning of allowing such places hide in the shadow those who tries their best to keep the community alive and social? Dont you realize this is also why SL is slowly being abandoned? I, with my little place, stand against these places welcoming every guest with a smile, talking to them, playing with them, and there are many other little realities out there who does the same.

Please LL, help us making the grid a better place for all of us who sees SL as what it was first created for. Help us getting rid of something as nonsense as AFK hangouts.

Have you ever visited the big AFK sims? There is more interaction than you would imagine at first. Its not just parking your avi at a piece of furniture anymore, but usually themed areas or rented rooms. One of the biggest (Sleeping Beauty) has over 30 rooms I think filled with escort girls. They are usually in available for AFK sex if they are RL occupied, but so many of them do advertise for RP interaction/sex when they are actually in SL

I have quite a few friends myself that I met and interacted with on AFK sim.

Instead of blaming a concept that seems quite popular for the diminishing interest in your "respected adult club" maybe do some innovation and get your club popular again. I see sex clubs out there that are still looking like when they were designed 10 years ago, nothing new, even sex furniture with decade old animations. If they expect that customers will accept that and just keep coming in they are wrong. In any entertainment business you need to keep renewing, innovating, keep up with the demand of your clients.

And keep in mind, of the traffic you see on the AFK sims, 95% (wild guess) of that traffic are the AFK models themselves, its not actually customers. They only add a tiny bit of the traffic numbers. So its not like your missing out on 60k traffic when you see an AFK sim with that amount.

This. All this.

I'm of a 'meh' attitude about them; I couldn't care any less and if it blows up someone's skirt then more power to them. I'm just tired of skipping past the dozens upon dozens of them in search results (Places, sorted by traffic, Adult=on) - yes, they do pollute the search results infamously - anyone not seeing them while A is turned on, even for innocuous terms is either indifferent, blind, or just plain fibbing. :)

But, as so many like to quip: it is what it is, right?

The majority of AFK dolls are not bots.  If they were bots, they wouldn't be decked out with full mesh, deciduan, spunklovers, VAW parts, etc.  Not only that, but many dolls rent parcels and pay weekly.  That would be an insane cost to be running multiple bots.  There are many alts, but don't mistake alts for bots either.  They are different.  All you have to do is inspect them and check their profiles.  Most of them have joined SL years ago with full profiles and groups joins.  It wouldn't make sense to do that for bots.

Complaining that it hurts your business is silly.   The AFK sex spots are vastly different to clubs and social hangout spots, so why would they hurt your traffic, if the business models are for different purposes?  The only business that would probably be affected are escorts, but then again, most guys visiting AFK spots wouldn't even bother with escorts in the first place.

There are various reasons why AFK sex spots are popular.  Some people do not like to socialize, and perhaps they have anxiety or anti-social skills.  The language barrier is another.  A lot of people are older now too so they don't have time trying to pick up girls or guys.  They just want a quickie.  Some are semi-afk or participate in RP with customers too.

Not by four, by one third. Europeans and Americans might not see it, but Aussies certainly see that number drop daily to 20K during our mid day when the rest of the world is asleep in bed. There are about 5K of us, so that would put the bot figure around 15K.

After those days where there is a crash you can also get a feeling it's about 15k as the bots are a bit slower to come back.

Thank you Callum.

It's HIGH TIME somebody actually pointed this out.

For years I've seen clueess old permanoob brain-death cases claiming thatr 90%/80%/75% of SL's currently logged accounts are "bots and alts" as if it was actual verified fact when even a casual glance at the concurency figures and the way they fluctuate shows that the fossils are WRONG.

Currently logged in figures vary from 25k to 50 k depending on time of day, day of week, weather, local holidays, etc.

Most bots ignore these variations, they don't log out to get 8 hrs sleep, they don't go off to a day job, 8 hr shift, they don't have commuting times to and from that day job, they don't wait till they have eaten their evening meal before logging in for 4-6 hours.

They don't therefore account for that 25-30k variation in concurrency figures, EVER.

....

I won't even bother to discuss the weapons grade stupidity in the other brain-dead fossil claim "obvous alts" as empirical experience in the interrogation room with the 24 vold truck battery and the jumper cables reveals that "obviously" usually bois down to "rezzed after 2008" or "last name is Resident" or "doesnt have an Elite Para Snop RP Trash backstory contained in 20 missused place picks"

....

"But they must be bots because they are in the sky"...

An old aquaintance of mine in SL, who runs a couple or three mesh clothing stores and a moderately successful alt-rock club, placed her club over 2500 m up when she rebuilt her sim. She did this because of the popular fossil-permanoob myth that "stuff over 1000 m up cant cause any lag" and she didnt want her club to lag the customers in her 3 stores, whose income PAYS TO KEEP THE SIM OPEN.

The stores are to make money, the club is for fun, she separates them by a couple or three killometers. High altitude does NOT automatically equal 'bot' only a moron would think it does.

....

In closing it's also worth pointing out as Chaser said...

I stay logged in 24/7

My landlady leaves her avi parked in a chair or a bed in her house inworld over night, when she goes to bed RL, so she can scan her chat history in the morning while eating her breakfast..

It's high time we taught these brain-dead "only me and my fellow Club-Brain-Dead-2006 members are actually people, the rest of you are all bots and alts" crapolla spouters to heel...

Call me naughty but I've started "AFKing" at those "AFK xxx places" on another monitor so I can perv my own avatar, or an alt thereof, as she has more fun than me.

So far though... It's just been furries going after her. o.O

As to those clubs... all I ever encountered in those was a scripted 'Hello Avatar Name' followed by

"OMG This DJ Rawks @@@..> ^O.o^ !!! HOOOO YEAHH WOOOT!"

... nobody ever actually talks in those places... let alone even tries to shag my avatar...

At least in the AFK place they admit upfront they won't talk to me... but they will give me some entertainment...

Well...

I've been camping 3 different avatars on these places for a couple of days now, on and off again while actively doing things on another computer. So not there 24/7... but for several hours at a stretch.

And in several places of varying levels of traffic.

It seems like no one actually uses these places. Not actually no one, but near as much.

My scientifically accurate, 100% peer reviewed, highly researched data... shows that "95%" of the people are AFK dolls, 10% are gawkers standing at the landing point and camming around, 5% are gawkers that wander around and click on your head so you get a look at thing, then move on do that everywhere else... and -2% are actual 'users of the dolls'...

Though last night I did see one avatar I thought "might be a child avatar" but she was running around too much and I couldn't get the name. More like a "tween" avatar... she had a very mild bump for boobs, a childish outfit, and was under maybe 4' in SL height (since I'm a 'too-scale' avatar, at about 5'7"... I'm on the shorter end, and if somebody is 30% or more shorter than my avatar, it stands out vividly).

In the entire time I've done this... I've been "visited" by exactly 2 furries. Both on the second time I tried it... and I usually only see at MOST one other 'AFKer' in a place 'being in action'... usually none, sometimes up to 1. I think once I saw two visitors on a sim at the same time...
- So my own avatar getting 2 'users' actually seems to have 'scored higher' than most of the blonds she's surrounded by...

Funny for something billed as 'AFK', but this scene feels dead... even the users of it, have rejected it. It's all just "sellers".

Maybe I just need to find the right sim.

Based on the general gist of the report, it could easily be me and my brief visits, which featured quite identical impressions.

Oh I agree, most traffic on the AFK sims are actually the models. But that's not weird, since they sit there 24/7 (more or less) and traffic count goes up for time spend. And visitor traffic can be horrible, specially in weekends people seem to be busy with social stuff and have RL people around, so they tend to to visit SL or specifically sex places in SL :)

But on normal weekdays traffic is decent. Do not expect tons of people around all the time, they come, do their thing and leave.

On our place we do hang around a lot with friends and some of the girls (who now are friends) and play around and have fun, so there's usually some activity. But strictly looking at the AFK traffic, its never really high. There's enough traffic to generate income to pay for 1/2 sim rent for me and motivate the girls to stay though, so its not that bad at all.

Your welcome anytime, oh and no furries on it. (No I don't dislike furries! We just decided to not mix "animal"and human sex)

You have a very nicely done venue, but I'm not sure it's for me. It appears to all be small houses for each model. I'm more into an open air or open floor spot. That said I would admit that one benefit of your venue would be being able to use my own furniture - which I have loaded up with choice animations from my SL explorations rather than the usual "whatever cheap junk I can throw into this to make a '300+ animations' advert on MP when I sell it..." :P

The first thing I do when I buy furniture these days is start ripping it apart. I resize it, then I delete the scripts, and put in my own copy of AVSitter from the open source github, and start loading in 'just the right' animations for that item.

So in trying some of these other venues... I've been "taken aback" by the low quality of many of the animations in 'prefab furniture'...

Oh we do have a series of rooms indeed, but most of the sim is actually open air (square, beach, park) and public locations and buildings :)

I figured this out... I've got you mixed up with the Sleeping Beauties place... That why your posts weren't making any sense to what I was seeing... O.o

You're "Dolls Delight" right?

If so... you're signing banning child avatars has a misspelling. :D

imediate should be immediate. :P

Also... I got there by following your Pick. I didn't realize this took me to 'just somewhere on a road' for a bit... until I opened about land and noticed the landing point was elsewhere. So... at first I was wondering... "how do I get the notecard, and is there a group to join?"

Yeah its on my list to change still, but thanks! will do it imediately! ;)

Oh, my pick should go to the landing zone, but I might have moved some stuff around since last time, will update it! Thanks again...

The non human is pretty loose, I mean we have elf's, angels, faries, neko's and other fantasy creatures visiting, as long as its mostly a humanoid body/head its not really a problem. Its mostly to protect the girls who do not like to be used by furries or animal avies. (I have banned full horses and donkeys for example who were trying to use girls...)

Mm, as a Neko that would rule me out too.

You could say "Humanoid only please. Anthropomorphic/Furry and Feral avatars are not allowed" maybe?

That covers 100% of them I think and leaves the elves, nekos, android, fae, angels, and all non-human avatars welcome.

Yeah, those words always end up making me feel sad.

I'm 99.9% human, I just have 2 kitten ears and a cute fluffy tail as extra parts. So, I generally leave.

Actually I had a difficult one the other day. Was a neko with human skin coloured sheathed bits. Which of course look very much like an erection.

I have a "see red and they're dead" rule regarding naked furries/ferals. This neko didn't have any red poking out. But it was a hard call due to the skin colour.

In the end I let it ride. Only two complaints from guests.

teehee. Have to keep the M rating.

A nude beach, with erections, can be rather problematic.

Thank you for the suggestion. As non English I do not always know the right words, but I changed my rule to now state:

Non humanoids (including anthropomorphic, furry and feral) are not allowed. As player you are welcome but please put on a humanoid skin and shape. In example elf, neko, fairy etc. are allowed. Use common sense.
