Would anyone mind explaining to me how all this mesh stuff works?

And my makeup too..

Yep - Makeup on mesh heads happens via an applier.  The Valentina body/head does not accept any appliers.  However, if you poke around the various HUDs supplied, there might be one that will apply some basic makeup.

Personally, I don't like mesh avatars...they all look the same to me. From what I have observed, it seems that 90% of the female avis have the same expression. Nothing in my inventory, which I've spent years collecting, fits a mesh avi. I do have slink feet...and I'm getting slink hands. But, to me, the mesh bodies lose the personality that you can put into a classic avi.

I would suggest frequenting a different venue then, where perhaps not 'all women' are deceived with the belief that to look like X at any cost is the best way to achieve positive attention. Or at least that when you see such a person, you might inquire whether perhaps they wouldn't feel a little more 'alive' with their favourite selection of facial AO loops activated in their bento head HUDs.

I got a new AO for my alt the other day, and I was just enthralled with the spectrum of emotions displayed when combining a certain gesture with a happy AO, a sad AO, an angry AO and a flirty AO. It was indeed captivating enough to briefly distract me from deciding which body AO I wanted to buy.

Nah, I was at an animator's shop and they had a variety of avatar AOs, the latest of which included 'full bento', i.e. body, hands and face - but I didn't like the facial AO in that one, so I tried it without the facial AO and looked like a zombie again - then I just tried out the various facial AOs I already had in my head's HUD and got carried away with how well it looked when the body AO did one thing and my facial AO did something else entirely - and how it actually looked pretty natural and lifelike most of the time.

My advice, don't be in a rush. It was over a year before I went to a mesh body, almost that long later before I bought my first mesh head, many months again before I went to Bento head, and while I would never go back I do not regret taking my time. As for cost it was basically all free, at least in terms of RL dollars because all the lindens I spent were either earned or won in contests in World.

Guess what: Nobody looking for advice on how to use mesh bodyparts cares for your opinion on how superior your classic avatar is.

And why is it, that people, who love their clearly superior classic avatar so much, seek out every opportunity possible to voice their hate for mesh bodys and heads? This thread is, again, a great example. Is it an uncontrollable urge, that needs to be scratched?

There is a subtle discrimination that happens in world towards people with classic avis. As I said above it took me over a year to switch, and I often felt like a  second class citizen. It tends to make you defensive and quick to lash out in protest. I even was considering making some T-Shirts that read "Classic Lives Matter". I think this is  why people feel  the need to voice there feelings, with all the talk about mesh you start to feel like  you are going to be the last one with a classic avi, such shout outs are a way of letting the others know they are not alone.

What discrimination happens inworld? Feeling uneasy, because people talk about mesh or because of other peoples personal choices regarding their own avatars, is a personal problem.

I've never experienced any discrimination inworld about me still having a classic head.  However, I **see** lots of it here in the forums from the people coming to request friends and lovers, but only want people that are full mesh because "obviously they are the only ones that really care about how they look".

I discriminate against those people!

Store models is required to have a "good" look. Expensive equals good for many. To be turned down because you aren't all mesh would feel unfair if you look good without a mesh body and head.

I can imagine that dancers and escorts need the most lifelike body, so it has to be hard to get a job as pole dancer with a classic body. The mesh heads has some interesting ways to use the facial expressions with adult activity.

Real life stores often require their models to be borderline-anorectic, have a certain height, complexion, hair, teeth and so forth - those aren't choices. Whether you get a mesh body in SL or not is a choice, unless your economy is in such negative excess that your local tax collector has decided to take your L$ too. Before which I reckon they'd repo your computer. Whether you go fishing, go play some raffles, or just get any job that doesn't require you to wear a full bento mesh body and head, you can get the L$ in-world.

On the flip side I'd say it isn't an entirely true statement - I've shot people in system bodies that look better than people in mesh bodies. Just putting on a Lara won't make you a model; you need to make a shape (or buy one - but, don't get me started on why no one ever should purchase one), you need a skin that goes with the body - and with your shape (having a skin that accentuates features that in the shape are subdued makes for some funny-looking avies), and a lot of clothes made still works with system avatars. More or less. Standard shapes can be a bit, eh. So yes - signing up for a modelling agency, you may run into trouble. But to be fair - most creators who create clothes and accessories have an avatar to which to test them - and it's so much easier to do a photo shoot with an avatar that you can control, than having someone else involved in the process. I'd dare say that 'clothing store model' is pretty much a dead trade in SL.

The most extreme case I saw was after I went mesh, I was talking with a guy and we were hitting it off pretty good, then another guy showed up in a classic avi who was an old friend,. The first guy asked about the second guy and I told him we were friends. He then told me that if I hung around people with classic Avis that he wanted nothing to do with me and he blocked me.

With my Bento head I can, and do, change the expression to fit the situation, I have a whole range of moods to choose from, happy, sad, angry, sleepy, and much more, and they are not fixed in one spot, If I choose to be playful, my avi will wink then stick out her tongue. I was never able to do that as a classic Avi
