A newcomer to the forums asked what "sim" meant and that got me to think, there are lots of phrases and terms we take for granted that will be completely incomprehensible to outsiders.

What we need, is a dictonary! It will have to be a collaborative work of course and I hope as many as possible will participate. But to get things started, here are definitions of a few essential words and phrases:

Ban: What you do to newbies, noobs and other strangers who enter your land.

Ban lines: Two different meanings depending on context:

  1. What you need around your own property to keep intruders out
  2. What inconsiderate, selfish people have around their properties to deny you your obvious right of way.

Block: What you do to newbies, noobs and other strangers regardless of where you encounter them.

Newbie: Somebody who hasn't had time to learn how to behave in Second Life yet. Should be avoided at all cost and banned and blocked whenever possible.

Noob: Somebody who doesn't seem to be able to learn how to behave in Second Life no matter how long they have been here. Not to be confused with the newbie but handled the same way.

Lag: The Second Life equivalent to weather. It can vary from bad to worse and is always somebody else's fault.

Let's F**k!: Greeting commonly used by gentlemen to introduce themselves to ladies they have yet to be aquainted with.

Sim: The same as "region". The term "sim" is short for "simulator" and inspired by the old theory that Second Life is not actually real but a series of computer simulations.

Tier: (From German: "animal"). Mythological beast who will eat your land and everything on it if you don't pay it every month.

Typonese: The official language of Second Life.

I don't think they were a newcomer lol :D

That's what the profile of the person who asked said. Screenshot - anonymized of course:

Edit: but this is a distraction. Let's focus on the actual task, not the incident that inspired it.

We can't discuss essentials without mentioning the MP (Marketplace). The marketplace is a online portal where users can buy and sell goods in exchange for Linden Dollars.

ORB (see ban lines):

  • A device to keep people out of your bedroom and off of your private sex bed.
  • A device you will forget to turn off - and so kick your latest lover out of your bedroom and off of your private sex bed.
  • A device to crash your no-mod scripts, because you are only 3 days old, not 30
  • A device to curse as it kicks you flying

NO-MOD:

Part of the Second Life permissions system. Used often by clothing, body, home, and furniture creators to ensure the integrity of their artwork remains - and so you can't resize/change the item to suit your home.

No-COPY (see gatcha):

Part of the Second Life permissions system. Makes the valuable rare object even more prone to house mesh errors and the dreaded "Could not rez" warning, with loss of said item.

SIM crossings aka SIM XING

A border between regions clever designed to let your feet end in one SIM, your clothing in another and if you are lucky your head at home.

If you are really lucky and hit the perfect intersection between four regions, you are in for a real SL unique only experience – enforced if you are driving, sailing or flying – and will be placed in SL Limbo observing your vehicle continue into the adventures of Lost & Found.

If you are more than lucky, you are teleported automatically without limbs and partially clothed to Noob Island materializing among naked screaming people.

If you are extra extra lucky, you are teleported with limbs, head and hair – but buck naked to a huge G-rated SL event among 100 SL citizens looking surprised at you, while the whole event is live video streamed worldwide.

Lost & Found - The Abyss

Normally the things you lost XOR the vehicle in question lost at SIM XING will be returned to you in Lost & Found – but… sometimes you will look in vain for the items there. So what happened to the items then?

Now we enter the realm of SL myths and the unknown. As comets the lost items fly through the hard working moles nets, drawing long trails of glowing particles over Linden Governor House as they fall down, down and down. Observed on the radar of SL server administrators and continuing falling down deep into the abyss of an old forgotten SL server hidden under dust and ages of woven binary data.

There below the reach of the known VR Universe it is believed a stockpile of millions of prims, sculpts, mesh is accumulated simmering with the sounds of scripts trying to revoke absolute commands - down there eastern of the moon and western of the sun in the mysterious Lost & Found Abyss.

In the prehistoric, old days those items - hair, shoes, handbags, skateboards - would appear firmly lodged in your, ummm, well, using a German word "Hintern" which I guess is close to the English word "Hiney"

GESTURBATING...

when your or someone else's avatar does some action and appropriate sound, such as yelling out HOO! with the avatars hands in the air, or a child like giggle while the avatar is clutching it's stomach as in the act of laughter, not once, or twice, but incessently ad nauseum...

Mute function is useful in this case
