If you have copy perms on any items in your inventory, you can copy them to the contents of rezzed prims and store them either in rezzed form on your own land or in your inventory.  If you have transfer perms of those items, you can also transfer backup copies to an alt.  Scripts, notecards, and textures that you have full perms on can be uploaded to your own computer either by cut and paste or (in the case of textures) by using the Save Texture As ... option in the Files menu.

Exporting objects is virtually impossible. If you own an object and have full perms, you can export it without violating LL's TOS.  Methods for doing that are fairly arcane, however, and generally do not yield objects that you can use in other 3D environments.  When mesh is activated on the main grid, we will have more options for those objects, but that's still a ways off yet.

if you have built something, say a shoe, and want to back this up you can export it to your hard drive. as long as you are the creator of all prims and the prim/linkset doesn't contain anything (textures/object contents) less than full perms you can export it (with the phoenix viewer) as an .xml-file by (rezzing it inworld) right clicking > more > more > export. name your .xml-file to something that makes sense to you, save and you're all set. import objects by going to file > import linkset. it doesn't cost anything and will rez at cam position.
