I know this isn't technically employment, but sl career focused.

I've been considering on and off for awhile of trying to get an sl job, i was considering dancing, but most places still want you to emote. curious if anyone has any tips or recommendations on products or websites or huds that could help with that. i feel like its a stupid thing to ask for, should be easy, but....

any advice is appreciated.  also if anyone knows places willing to teach new employees that be great to. I'm fully mesh wish a pretty sweet wardrobe imo. lol

In my first couple of months here I somehow lucked into having a mentor (the first of three I'd eventually know in my first year). As it happens she was a stripper and she explained a lot about how that works in SL. One day she took me to a store that sold dance poles, among other things. Big store, lots of poles to demo. While we were looking, a woman who was demo-ing a pole nearby started emoting. Of course I had no idea what emoting was, so I said, "Wow, somebody is having a really good time in her imagination". Joana explained that it was emoting and suggested I try it.  I made one attempt and then stopped and said,  "I can't do this! It feels like I'm writing some crappy romance novel.", which cracked her up.

Just talk right straight at people. If the antisocial in your title refers to you, that will be challenging but far more beneficial to you. You'd be surprised how just saying hello to guys who walk in can start conversations and if he asks you a question that means you have to answer. Next thing you know you'll be having a conversation.

Or, you can emote. The woman at the store mentioned she put all her emotes on a notecard for easy reference. Seriously. "Hello, Studly Dudley and welcome to the Skindazzle Club. I shall now read from a prepared text."

BTW, there actually is plenty to do in SL that does not require a lot of social time, such as building, scripting, terraforming and about a zillion others. However, I did look at your flickr and that bod is definitely worth showing off. Go for it. It's Second Life, what can it hurt to try?

emoting just felt so phony to me.  and Im a huge introvert, so at the start of my sl that equaled AWKWARD!!!  lol

Thankfully when I met my partner it was two weeks in, and his one condition was that I didnt work in the strip clubs.  I was THRILLED!!!  I hated it.  lol

I now run my own shop and spend a ton of time creating and alone and Im quite happy.  :)

and yes still with my partner that I met two weeks in and that was 9 years ago this week.  :P

Emoting is really awkward to me too. I am also quite the introvert so throwing around emotions is not generally my thing. But also I am very visual. So if someone comes up like "/me is sensually doing this and that to you" My mind goes: Hell no your not, your just standing there doing your general AO standing around stuff... Just does not work for me :)

Probably it just needs a couple of well made animations for you watch, while your partner enriches the scene with some emoted details.
That combination should do it.

That might fix half the problem. This kind of interaction usually requires two way communication and for someone who is less emotionaly expressive its very unnatural and forced to use emote in Sl like that. Thus the awkward feeling and destroying the mood.

Have to add, last (and only) time I had an SL relationship was around 2008, well made animations and visualy attractive were not really a thing then haha

Hmm

I didn't know Emoting was frown upon like the tummy talker lol

I on the other hand, likes emoting....

It just makes things flow when I'm doing an action with someone else, ... it sets the atmosphere really.

Now I don't strip,  but I host, family roleplay, whatever whatever, and emoting just helps makes it smooth. Else it wouldn't work for me.

And man do I hate just standing there when talking, so I'm usually doing something to what I'm emoting about....

It's not about being a fancy writer or what not, you're only typing what you'd do..or want to do. If you wouldn't do it then don't emote bout it.

hopes that helps. Just be you, in your own words and way.

I've been emoting for so long it just becomes second nature.

How boring would it be to just watch your avatar have sex with another. Its  like a bad porno.

Emoting makes everything come alive, and a well written emote at just the right time can seriously push you over the edge.

On the other hand i totally suck at emoting thank yous while pole dancing. I guess everyone has their strengths.

As a dancer, I recommend that you should practice all the time your emoting by doing it regularly. Read some erotic novels to grow and enhance your vocabulary. It will take time for you to be good at it just keep practicing. If you really want to learn and practice, try to join roleplaying sims too. There are some roleplaying sims that are not sexual, you can start there. You can choose any roleplaying sims that you have interest. You can interact with your fellow roleplayers and eventually enhance your emoting. Just focus on the content first then afterwards improve your speed.

There are plenty of emote HUD's on market place to buy which you can customise. Just make sure you don't emote the same things over and over, you need enough different emotes to get you through your ...shift.

I think I must have been a natural with a vivid imagination because when I needed to learn how to emote it just came to me so I would sit down and fill in note cards with all these /me emotes to last me for hours which also saves you having to type everything out, copy/paste the emote into chat then enter the tippers name.

Also ask your fellow dancers if you can look at their emote cards and change them around a little, that's what a few of the ladies did for me and all I had to do was change the 'her' parts to 'his'

Oh and I had to learn to emote for my...ummmm....SL church Choir..yes that sounds more believable, I think I got away with it.

I hate to say it but emoting is not all it's cracked up to be. after typing all day at an office job to come home and log onto SL only to do more typing.... no thanks. It's 2017 ffs get a mic and media recorder and give me real theater post production quality. Still looking for a way to auto process these forum in text to speech xD

In reference to the thread title: "emote classes...helping the the antisocial be social"

Why push the antisocial to be social? Perhaps we like being antisocial. Bah! Humbug!

;)

In my opinion, emoting is best served in small doses. Something like "/me sets Maddy on fire" is fine, but a long sentence is too much.

Fantastic, actually.

"/me lights Maddie's fire." sounds much better. ;)

In this instance, I have to side with Par. Anything that clears out the other half of the attic is fine with me.

i dunno, long is good to for example,

/me sets Maddy on fire then runs off to get a stick and a bag of marshmallows  to roast over the glowing embers of her remains

I know this is an older post, but I think emoting is awkward too. I wish I could find friends in SL that just didn't do this all the time. I feel fake and it's just not who I am and the friends I have met in SL who do emote, seem to get angry that I don't like it, but I just don't. It seems like almost 90% of the people I meet who emote, when I tell them I don't because it's not me, they stop talking to me. It makes life lonely in SL
