From the other side of the fence, some of the appeals of being an AFK doll doesn't have anything to do with money.

Things like seeking attention/confirmation/ego-boost/whatever, basically just wanting to be desirable (even if it's just surface-level). There's also many different kinks that fit specifically for the concept, like somnophilia (sleep sex), BDSM (punishment/speech/movement restraints), that thing where you're getting banged while your focus is on something completely different (and probably mundane), literal necrophilia like someone somewhere already mentioned, ol' fashioned sl*ttery (for any reason), etc.

I've looked around at some of the AFK places and I don't think it's a problem. It's a way for some people to maybe make a few $L at least, and there's no harm in it. Most of the places have rules as well that are meant to be followed so the people who are AFK don't get harassed and such.

I'm fine with the concept of a place where people can drop their avatar for a few hours while they are AFK, but most of the places I've seen so far are gridlocked with avatars that are there for weeks at a time, 24/7. And given that in some places these bot accounts were run by the venue owners, I can't see self-policing working out.

I'm not sure how that can be fixed without breaking perfectly fine uses for bot accounts - like clothing models.

A lot of girls you see 24/7 at a sim probably rented a room there, so yes, they are always in that room on that sim. Or it is their favorite sim, or they are staff/crew or they just get most income on tips there so they always leave their avi on that sim. You also see a lot that rotate over the various sims. All is possible, non is good or bad, it just is their way.

Also a lot (most probably) AFK models are not main avies but an alt anyway. Leaving their alt sit AFK and make money while they play and spend the money on the main account.

Why is a bot/alt for clothing model perfectly fine, but one for AFK sex not? If the bot/alt is good enough looking for guests to enjoy it, why would it be a problem? Its AFK sex, no need to be actively controlled.

Good points. 

I guess the issue for me is if an adult sim advertises an AFK area for visitors to both use and staff, and yet the area is always filled with the same avatars all day every day for weeks at a time. That doesn't seem right. Certainly seems like false advertising.

But as I mentioned (but didn't make clear) this is something for the sim owners themselves to police, not LL. At least in theory. It's a shame when owners will cynically promise one thing while monopolising it themselves for their own profit, but the only solution is to avoid paying those places a dime.

Or OP is upset that all spots are already filled, typically by the same AFK Avs every day, so OP can't put their AFK Av out and make a bit of money at some popular and potentially profitable AFK location.

The major selling point of both of the two places I'm referring to (I don't want to mention names) was that they were open (and indeed designed for) amateurs to experiment; one even had a rule against 'professional' escorting or stripping. I'm still new to SL, still very much so in a phase of experimenting, and I wanted to give it a try, see what it was like. Instead I found every single slot in both venues filled by the same avatars in the same beds for two straight weeks (I made a note after the third day). In the case of males, with just a cylinder prim and a few spheres you can make your own. As long as you leave it plywood textured and turn it up to full shine you will be up with the best of the latest noob Romeos.

There are a few venues that have quite limited available spots, but there's plenty of larger ones with open public areas. Some things to make it fun experimenting as AFK model

- Find a place that is moderated to prevent griefing as much as possible and has rules against freeloading, and where you feel comfortable being.
- Be attractive / unique. Competition is fierce and its no fun to sit AFK for days and not get a single client. Attractive is a personal taste, but full mesh is advised to have success.
- Be open minded. You will get used by any kind and type. Male, female, shemale, femboy, if sim allows also furry or feral, gentle, rough, kinky, rude and whatever else SL has to offer.
- Have fun! You wont get rich from it

Problem with those places it hurts the reguler dancers at reguler clubs. Why tip a dancer or escort when you can go to one of those AFK places and get it for free. I do not see how any money can be made there. If people can get it for free, the do lol,

The difference between dancers/escorts and AFK is the interaction you get.

What about the people who RP just for fun without even charging for it? They're the real enemy to dancers and escorts!

Any dancer or escort that is truely afraid of the afk sex places, should consider improving their performance.

Sure, for some people the afk avatar might be it, but for many others the interaction with another person is what drives them to spend the money on a real escort or dancer.

In theory, yes. But so would be normal dating in SL. But the escorts and dancers still get business. The money the guys pay is the compensation for having no extra effort on their side. An escort will never reject a client because of their avatar, their RP skills (some don't even want that) and may be even okay with a wider range of fetishes. Its a shortcut and some guys may even like the fantasy of picking any woman they want.

The people who "get it for free" will only have a few times since they will get their cheap asses banned at the AFK places. Don't mistake AFK sex with free sex. Maybe a few sims allow that, but the quality of the girls there is usually not the best.

I don't see how a sex doll is competition for a dancer to be honest.

I thought things were picking up in Kama City when I saw 13 avatars in the sim. No, there's a new gay AFK sex place in a skybox, with 8 AFKs and "Bob The Bot". Not causing too much lag, though; lag was much worse when some inept landowner had a "land board" constantly scanning.

Well, its not purely an afk club. It is an escort and swinger club with some rooms for afk-dolls.
Not a big place, more smallish and cozy-classy style.

I don't think the direct income will be high, But that doesnt bother me.

it will generate nice stories which I can monetize via ads. In addition It will generate a nice mailing list and certainly some income via the display ads in the club.

Someone put a gay AFK sex place in a skybox near my parcel in Kama City. There were suddenly 9 avatars nearby, the same 9 all the time, so I finally went up to look. They have their own little park-like skybox 900m up, with 8 AFKs and "Bob the Bot" supervising them. No customers, as far as I can tell. No visible advertising. Doesn't seem to lag the sim. At least it's not a nuisance.

I think it's tacky, but harmless.
