My RL best friend is Muslim. She had come home for a visit, and we were going to the mall. I commented on how pretty the hijab she was wearing was. She asked if I would like to wear one out on our excursion as an experiment, and I thought it might be interesting to see what sort of reactions I would get, so I did. I was treated with hostility, rudeness, and in a lot of other negative ways that had I looked like a middle class, white "probably Christian" woman, I never would have. . I realize this isn't the same as skin color, but I got a RL taste of what a lot of Muslim women go through that I otherwise never would have. I had WITNESSED it plenty of times, but to experience it first hand was something altogether different. It was a real eye opener. ETA I live in very close proximity to the largest community of Muslims (Middle Easterners) in the world outside of the Middle East ETA (again) my friend is not Middle Eastern, she's actually of Yugoslavian descent, but converted many years ago.

I'm glad you accepted your friend's offer, learning experiences like that are priceless. My best friend is from Iran, is an atheist, and is no fan of Islam (she thinks Christianity is a much lesser evil). I don't think she was treated any differently than me when we were in engineering school together, or at least not for any ethnic reasons. She's beautiful. She never had trouble getting dates. I never tried. ;-).

She lives in the SF Bay Area now and has noticed increasing hostility towards her Iranian friends there since 9/11, but mostly when they're speaking. They'd probably all pass for Greek if they weren't speaking Persian. If you spend any time at all talking to her, her husband, or her Iranian circle of friends, you fall in love. They are possibly the most observant, humorous people I know. Some of that comes from being highly educated and some from having a rich and different history giving them a different perspective on American culture.

In the sense of being able to easily escape any negativity one's presentation may attract here in SL, this place is a game. RL is serious business.

Everything in RL is so politically-charged today and it's sad. Personally and what we see in our own families growing up is that imitation can occur out of two motivations: One hate but the other one love. I think most people are good and most people try new things to broaden their horizon and learn how to be more sympathetic, open people. And perhaps also, as we learn more about family DNA and just how much all of us are mutts, a little bit more about the roots we may not even know that we have.

The arch of my family history extends through the Yakut people, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Berber, Jewish, Druze, Eastern and Mediterranean European, Gaelic, and other backgrounds. And that's just from the DNA along one tiny sliver of my mother's side of the family, counting none of the other branches connected to it or my father's side (which will only be known if my brothers or father test for it since I don't carry YDNA). When you cross that with known migration patterns throughout history, we're all everything and should learn to embrace it. SL provides an opportunity to expand beyond ourselves into others' experiences and learn to be a better, kinder person; it also may shed light into how our own family members and forefathers experienced the world around them. Of course, there are bad people who abuse it but that's true for anything - and it's sad. but we can't let them ruin the beauty of life.

How would anyone know what you are in RL? And why would anyone care. My SL boyfriend started out as a skinny white guy, but me and my partner gave him a makeover, now he is a big black bull.

*grins*

LOL,  I'm guilty at this one.  Well... He wasn't a skinny white guy, but a nice built white guy.  Now a Black Bull. :D

Things like an avatars race and gender don’t matter too much to me.  I think if you are in Second Life (or any other online world) then you can be who you want to be.  The only proviso I would offer is don’t lie about it if asked point blank about your real life self.   You don’t have to answer their question and you can say “I’m sorry but I don’t discuss my personal life with people I don’t know” but once you lie about who you are then you run the risk of creating problems for yourself.

As someone said – we are not required to be who we are in reality in a virtual world.  Another person asked though why would anyone care?  Why indeed is what I say, but some people do.  And even though there are thousands of people involved in SL and those other online worlds who would share that attitude sometimes it just takes one negative experience to set a series of events in motion that can have very real and far reaching consequences in real life.

Let me tell you a story.  There was this guy that began playing an online roleplaying game.  It was his very first mmo and he created a very cool female avatar with a great backstory.  He was fun to be around and a great role-player. He was doing missions with someone one day and they were having a great time until the inevitable question came up of “Are you a girl in real life?”.  The guy answered honestly that no, he was a guy in real life.  That changed things and the other person got very nasty.  Instead of just passing it off the guy simply began lying about who he was to everyone he met online.   He played this game with his real life wife who, after seeing the situation getting out of control, could not handle the lies he was telling to the people that they both had become friends with.   This created a rift between them and, ultimately, they wound up separating and are now divorced.

An extreme situation perhaps but it wouldn’t be the first time a virtual world has affected reality.  If the person that was nasty had just been a little bit open minded – who knows what might have happened?  That couple may still be together.   But we live in reality, and sometimes Second Life mirrors that reality a bit too well because we are dealing with the real life people behind the avatars and any negative attitudes they bring into the virtual world we share.

I used to go between the black skin you see in my profile pic, a green skin, and a pale white skin. I actually stopped wearing the green skin out, even though it was given to me by a dear friend, because I got tired of everyone asking if I was sick. I did not get hit on often in the black skin, but I loved how my avi looked and it was the main one I used for a long time. Still super sad the creator is gone and I can't use it with my mesh body.

People were noticeably nicer to me when wearing the pale skin. I got hit on a lot more.

I'm back to wearing green, an updated one that works with mesh body. I'll probably just put up with the are you sick comments because it's the favorite skin of one of the few people who's opinion actually matters to me.

I'm probably going to make a pale avi too, for when I feel like getting hit on in public. But green June is the realest June to me.

TL;DR: yup, people discriminate, even if it is mostly subconscious, against non-white avis in sl. At least in my experience.

IMO - there should be NO race or gender 'bending' (what a disgusting term) on SL.

Linden Lab should INSIST on passport details when accepting a new user and his/her alts. Then, in future, if anyone wants to query, they should be able to contact the Lab and ask for the ethnicity and gender of any person.

IT IS NOT INVASION OF PRIVACY FOR LL TO SAY "THIS IS ACTUALLY A WHITE MALE" if someone is presenting on SL as BLACK FEMALE.

And if anyone disagrees with this - I urge others to look into what they have to hide!!!

I'd be more inclined to look into what you have to hide, but you seem hell bent on advertising it.

If you don't bend races, when the track reaches the edge of the sim, all the cars fall into the ocean...

Gotta have corners, besides, it makes the race more interesting...

Why stop there, deaf people shouldn't be allowed to hear, even to read things people type in chat boxes, but can only communicate when people use sign language, people in wheelchairs should not be allowed to walk, people who are older must have an avi that reflects there true age. People with a weight problem cannot be skinny, and so forth.

And - as predicted - the jackals gather to howl without actually saying anything.

I see no predictions in anything you wrote above.

Besides, having fun is the best way to deal with a troll.

Clive is so amusing, bless him. His posting history is a hilarious litany of SIGNED, DISGUSTED OF SECOND LIFE.

Ebbe is the bomb that destroys SL!
99% of creators rip off textures from the internet!!!
People commit FILTHY DEEDS in SL!
Ban lines should be torn down and those who put them up abuse-reported!!!
It should be compulsory for all new accounts to submit their passport details!
Users should be able to contact LL and demand to know the ethnicity and gender of anyone else!
If you disagree with my viewpoint, you are an animal!

Clive, sweetie, the only howling we're doing is that of laughter. At you. Thanks for the chuckle.
