I know there must be a very simple answer to this question, so I am hoping someone will be able to sate my curiosity.  Even though SL is free to join, it takes Lindens to buy land, have a decent avatar, upload photos, join certain groups, etc.  So I am always curious when I see an avatar that has been on SL for years and does not have any payment information on file.  Yet, they have a beautiful home, mesh avatar, etc, etc, etc,    As I said, I am sure there is a simple, logical answer .. and I am hoping someone will be able to share.  Thank you!

They could be the alts of accounts with payment info on file, in which case they can recieve gifts from those avatars, or the could make all their Lindens through tips and other in-world activity.l

It is possible to make L$ through in world activities if you don't have your own personal cash cow/pig pig to bank roll your slxistanct i've known many a person over the years who openly point blank refuse to put a single penny in to SL if you can build up a nice reserve of L$ and make good money every week just through in world stuff you can have a comfortable SL existance with a modest parcel of land beautiful home furniture well stocked wardrobe and the latest mesh body parts and what ever else takes your fancy

Yes...most likely alts. It is really difficult to make money without investing just a little real life cash into SL. Probably even more difficult starting out now.

My "peace and quiet" avatar has no payment info but has mesh body, new clothes, hair, etc.  The lazy cow also lives rent free in my house, never cleans up after herself and has a much tidier invent than I do.   :D

Good thing not everyone thinks that way. If they did, Second Life would have been terminated a long time ago.

I'm premium, and I buy Lindens for land and clothes etc. Considering how many hours i'm in SL every week, my expenditures work out to pennies an hour.

If you work inworld, that's different, because even though you don't buy Lindens, someone who pays you had to, same with when you use the Lindens to buy stuff, you are contributing to the SL economy, and in the end to LL's profitibility and Second Life's continued existence.

I guess SL makes it easier for freeloaders and moochers to get by, i just hope they don't whine too much when SL folds.

*shrugs*

I gave my alts their own home on the mainland. I don't want those deadbeats messing up my own home.

I made mine set home to a platform very high up in the sky - pretty much banished unless I need them to help me with something. B|

I gave my alts nice comfy homes for me to borrow. ^_^

They'll never notice because they're hardly ever online at the same time as me - I think we live in different time zones.

My alt is one of those self righteous types who never does any sort of virtual reality computer simulation. What is wrong with you that you need to escape the real world. Actually I just think she is bitter cause I won't give her nice things.

As long as they don't also start speaking a European language you don't know! Those translation devices never get it right.

Umm, I do that myself. I try my best to speak English but I never get it quite right.

You mean they're traffic bots? ;)

Nah, they only log in when I need them to do something - test permissions, help set pose positions, etc...   If they always log in to the sky platform, then I don't have to worry about them logging into a wall, furniture, shrub, whatever if things got moved around.  In the olden days, that was more problematic than it is now.

LOL... Just too funny.  My Alt... I even say it is an ALT when out running around on it.  Looks just like my Main avatar.  Run into a lot of same people I know and they don't get the clue who it is.

OK. I am going to answer this logically.

EVEN TODAY (it was easier in the past) someone can come in and live for "free" and have a nice MESH avatar.

Here is how I would do it today (and I did it in a similar manner nine years ago).

  • Go to the realms and earn money chasing crystals (not as lucrative as it use to be but still works)
  • LEARN how to build either inworld or outside and upload products into SL and sell them
  • Find a nice place to live for free ("I" just did this even at my old age and it is super with a lovely BIG house and 180 prims == and no I am not telling but they are out there)
  • Get free group gifts and go on hunts for clothes and things.
  • Open a store inworld (again you can find free spots) and / or on the Marketplace.
  • ALL IT TAKES IS EFFORT!!!!!!

There are other ways, if you are female, that do not involve learning to build, but that last line "ALL IT TAKES IS EFFORT!!!!!!" that is still true, whatever you do to earn money in SL, it won't work unless you treat it like a job and be disciplined at it.

I know that there are male dancers and escorts in SL, since I've seen a few here and there.  Do they actually make any money?  Does anyone pay for men?

They do make money, it might only be the girls dancing with them who feel sorry for them who tip them though.

Pay some random guy to do what 99 others will eagerly do for free.... or spend that money on new hair? Hmmmm.
