Muting is one-way.  You won't be bothered by hearing what the muted person says in chat, but they will be able to see your chat (or group chat) just fine. The other person won't even know that you have muted her.

Muting only works in one direction.  So if you mute someone, they can still hear you in chat and group IM.

The person you have muted will appear entirely gray to you until or unless you unmute them.  If you send them an IM or an object or notecard, you will unmute them.

If you're worried about them seeing what you say in group chat about them, then refrain from speaking in a group or open chat situation about someone. In fact, just keep it to yourself. That's the beauty of SL, you can mute and forget about someone you do not like, you really have no need to do any more than that. Hope my advice isn't too late :smileyindifferent:
