Everytime I try sending a friend a gift from the marketplace it tells me 

1 item failed with the error: Second Life communications timeout

However, I can send stuff to other friends without problems. Just this one friend. She's even online at the time of the orders but it doesn't make any sense. Help please?

There is a known bug where the Marletplace fails to recognise certain people for gifting. Checkout Innula`s posts on this other thread & see if it could be the same problem with your friend.

I have had he Same issue with purchsing items fr People, Only way around it s ethier A I take them to the store and shop with them or B give them the Link and the L and they get it them selves or C Try to find a vendor who makes Trans Items I can buy and give away Inworld.  Hopefully this Bug clears up soon and gifts can be purchased

OK Innula has added an edit to her comment there, if you go to the JIRA page and type WEB-3126 in the search box it seems to get to the JIRA, no idea why the link isn`t working.
