yeah, unfortunately they found that while XMPP can handle large multiples well, it can't handle large single loads like they had hoped

no one had ever tried large groups for single chats, only large amounts of single chats.... the latter it handles fabulously, the former, unfortunately, hasn't seen any scalable solutions tested.... obviously XMPP failed that test.

but does it handle the data requirements in the manner LL needs it to? does it meet the bandwidth and scalability bars?

I don't know those things, if it turns out that IRC does meet those requirements then I'd love to see it pursued, or know why it isn't...

IRC may not meet every single requirement LL has, but it is the closest protocol ever made. It was designed in the late 80s with the goal of one server being able to handle thousands of users. And the ability of linking servers together to make global chat channels that scale in hundreds of thousands of users.
