They are grey because you blocked them, you would not be grey to them unless they blocked you too.

The grey thing only works on certain viewers too.

I just tested this with an alt using the latest V2.6.1 viewer.  The muted alt turned grey, however I did not turn grey from her perspective.  There was no indication to her that I muted her and she saw me normal.

That said, I believe this is a viewer side feature and probably varies depending on which viewer you are using.

Be careful if you mute someone and then accept something from them or IM them.  Once you do something like this, they are unmuted.
