Hello, I have a great house as well as a sky box and am looking for places to set them up.  I am not a premium member yet, as I don't need their house.

Questions:

1.  Can I become a premium member and not take the house but get an empty lot instead?

2.  Am I better off renting or buying? Why?

3.  Where should I go for the most privacy while still having the option to be social with my neighbors?

Thanks.

1 yes, but it's doubtfull your free tier level will be enough to hold a home and skybox, also the size of the objects need to match the land you want

2  thats totally up to your own choice, mainland has no covenants ( some exceptions) estate land nearly always has covenants and restrictions.

3 see 2  adn you can use parcel settings and devices to take care of your privacy

An addition to what has already been said - You don't automatically get a 512 parcel (mainland) if you go premium, and you don't automatically get a Linden home either. You need to claim a Linden home if that's what you want, or you need to buy a 512 parcel. If you don't do either of those, you have no land at all.

What you do get for going premium is the ability to have 512sqm of land without having to pay tier (rent to LL) every month. You can use it as a Linden home, or you can buy a 512 parcel of mainland from another user.

You can't buy any land on islands. They are all owned by users. But you can rent land on an island without the need to have a premium account. You would need to look at mainland and island prices and figure out what suits you best.

I'm a premium member, have been for years. I'm tired of having a Linden Home I can't decorate myself and quite frankly it's time they were upgraded, they are truly awful.

How do you get an empty lot?

How do you get an empty lot?

open search, go to landsearch, check mainland, enter the size and/or amount, voila...go look ...
or
fly over mainland, look at the yellow parcels at the map... and pick one you like for a closer look.
Be sure about the size you want, and the fitting tier level, because everything that goes over your free level of 1024 wil cost you extra every month, also, you will have to buy the land, you won't get it for free.

If you have one, right click the land to buy, or open "about land"  and see the buy options.

Also don't forget your linden home doesn't count against the parcel limits, when you buy one yourself it will.
As example, if you buy a 1024 mainland parcel, put a house with 200 prims on it, you won't have any profit in gaining space for decor.

it's totally possible to make a linden home a very nice decorated place, you only need to buy your items carefully at low LI.
There are plans to upgrade the linden homes, but might take some time. The ones there are now are dated, but some styles are certainly not directly awfull, and very versatile.

Note that new Linden Homes ARE in the works and apparently pretty spiffy  --- well let's hope so!   These will be 1024s so that might be an easy option for you. I haven't listed to the Patch Linden interview yet but hopefully will today. There may be more info there.

Hi, you don't need to be a premium member to rent. If you have a premium account but haven't use all or some of the tier, you can apply it to the cost of a rental in my system.

I believe renting is better than buying because it is cheaper and you have more flexibility. But having your own land can be worth the price as you fully control it -- until you want to sell it and no one wants to buy it. So rent!

I believe my Bed & Breakfast system allows you both the option to "be on the ground" and socialize to some extent but also have an attached skybox for privacy. Then you can do the activities on the sims nearby like boating or exploring and also have the option for privacy. But "socializing" can be a catch-as-catch can thing in SL. People are on different time zones, or they want to retreat to their skyboxes or whatever. "Socializing" can mean meeting someone and then offering to go somewhere else with them -- but it is good to have a half-way place that isn't home but still nice and not a club that is crowded and laggy.

What I feel my system does is enable people to make friends and have things to do without the stress of feeling they are immediately inviting them home to a skybox where the sex bed seems the only option for the evening. Some people would rather take things slower in dating or just be friends.

I also have empty lots where you can place your own buildings which also have hangouts nearby.
