You must pay in US $.  If you have L$, you may sell them to other SL residents on the LindeX to get US $.  Linden Lab will always use any US $ that are already in your account to pay your maintenance fees.  If there are not enough $ there, they will charge your credit card or PayPal or Skrill account.
