how do I edit the body of my avatar?

right click yourself

edit shape

a tool will pop up with sliders to alter your body

 

the best resutl for this tool you get with the standard shape, with mesh the changes will be limited or even not at all working.

If you wear mesh that's not editable you need to replace your body with a non mesh one, or as you said simply totally change tha body till you like it.

Of course also possible to buy a new mesh body that suits your need.

However if you rshape is no mod, you cannot do this, you would need to get a new shape to do that which is mod. I once had a no-mod shape, it was free and I loved it so I dealt with it.
