Sure!  If you are a skilled creator (3D modeller, LSL scripter, animator, designer ....) or a performer (DJ, live musician ... ), you can make a decent income in SL.  You do need to know your way around the SL economy well enough to know the market and you need to provide a competitive product or service (there are a lot of very good creators and performers in SL), but if you can do it, welcome to the crowd.  Keep in mind that those of us who follow those careers in SL could earn much more doing the same things in RL, so we aren't in it for the money.  We work in SL because we enjoy it. The bottom line is that if you're really interested in getting L$, the fastest, easiest way is to get a RL job and then buy them on the LindeX.

Otherwise, there's very little need for unskilled labor in SL.  Creators generally sell their own products, and there's little need for clerks, accountants, drivers, etc.  You can work for pennies in clubs, or by playing some games in SL, but the earnings are usually small.  Check out http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Guide_to_Jobs_in_Second_Life and then see what's available in the InWorld Employment forum. You may want to post there yourself.

No, there is no job system. Second Life is a sandbox environment with just user created content. Some people earn money by offering either doing jobs offered by other residents (example: working as a host in a club), offering their skills on a freelance basis (example: a live musician) or running their own business (example: creating their own furniture).

Most of the jobs you find in SL pay very little, compared to a real life job, so it takes longer than to simply buy L$. And you may not have the skills to make your own 3D objects, script or create your own animations. Its definitly not an easier road.
