why cant i see others in the game

Have just started to play this game. I see my avatar but no one else?

Do you know people are around you?  Open your minmap and see if you see any green dots around you.  If you don't then there is no one at your location.   It could just be the time of day you're in world.  Some places are active with lots of people, but only during times when it's popular for people to be logged on.You can check the destination guide or search for other places and/or look at the regular map for places where there are other people (green dots) and TP there.

If you see green dots in your immediate vicinity then it just may take time for people to rez and show up on your screen.  If after a while you still see no one, come back and edit your post and tell us.

There are several kinds of games in SL, most of which you can play by yourself, so it is not too surprising if you don't see other people at any moment.  Even in large-scale games like Linden Realms or PaleoQuest or Horizons, there may be only three or four people in the same region at once.  If they are in buildings or on the other side of a hill, you would only be able to spot them on your mini-map, as Amethyst said. The time to worry about not being able to see other people in a game is when you are playing a casino game or a role-playing game.  You'd normally expect to see other people interacting with you or all crowded around nearby machines.

If you want to be in places where there are lot of other people, you might visit clubs or shopping areas instead of playing games. SL is basically a social environment, not a "game", so people tend to hang out in places where they can buy stuff or dance or whatever.
