How do I find a place to add my purchases to my Avatar? A sandbox I think it is called? I am new...

To add them to your avatar?  As in, "to wear them"?  Open your inventory, find an object, right click, and select "ADD".  You do not need a sandbox.

However, if your objects were delivered in boxes, you will have to unbox them first >>> https://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Opening-boxes/ta-p/700185 .  For that, you do need a sandbox.

To find public sandboxes, use Search (CTRL+F).  Select the Places category and type "sandbox" in the search keyword box.

Or, you can use the sandbox or the private changing rooms at Caledon Oxbridge University.
