This is a case for SL support, either as a trouble ticket or, if your account is Premium, in a live Chat.  It might also be that the region you are attempting to log in at is for some reason offline.  In that case a login at some other location, either from favourites or at a "Safe Hub" might be advisable.

You didn't give us enough information to know why you can't log in. Use the viewer's HELP->ABOUT... before or after login to collect info on your computer and viewer.

If you are getting an error message, include that too.

If you just hang forever at the 'contacting' message, something unusual is wrong. That hang normally times out and a error message is presented. You don't say how long you are waiting.

Ayesha's recommendation is a quick troubleshooting step. Visit the Destination Guide web page and pick a new place to log into. Click the orange teleport button and let it start your viewer. If the problem is a down region or one having problems picking a different region should circumvent the problem.

As an alternate avatar can log in, you don't have a hardware or viewer or network issue. But, you don't say if the avatars log into the same or different regions. So, it looks like a region specific problem.
