Question

you can not ask questions at a specific person, but you can always come to the forums when you have not enough knowledge about mainland ( or in the knowledgebase)

To keep your questions easier, please don't call abandoned and auction in one line, because abandoned doesn't automaticly mean that land is in auction.

In general for your hills question.... no they can't get turned into flat land.

Always go look at the land before you bid.

As other advice, go to the landsales section in the inworld search... there are lots of huge, and small, hill and flat... for sale by residents at often lower prices than the auction parcels... for sure when there are more bidders.

The only way to tell is to go to the land itself and look at it.  All land sold by LL is 'as is' and they aren't going to go and look at it for you to answer your questions.  All in all though, it's 'buyer beware'.  If you have a lot of questions about a parcel it may be better not to bid in an auction but buy a parcel from another resident that can answer your questions.

My advice is not to go for a hilly section being auctioned, but one that is flat, if that's what you want.  The limit on terraforming on the mainland will probably not be sufficient for your needs.  If you are going for this parcel due because it is cheaper than other's that is probably why.  However if you are only looking to make a level spot to rez a house on and don't care if the rest is hilly, you can probably use the "Flatten" tool in the terraforming tools to accomplish this.

Hi Sagia.

That was my answer, about terraforming.  I'm not an employee of Linden Lab (nor is anyone in this forum.  We are all residents like you.)

LL won't answer your questions about auction parcels.  You are expected to find out yourself whether you want to buy them or not.

You can often (but not always) tell whether the land has been terraformed up to, or down to, its maximum limits.  if the surface of the land looks faceted or slightly rough and jagged, it's probably at its upper or lower limit.  If there is an almost vertical slope between the land and a neighboring parcel that is about 4m or more in height, it may have been terraformed to its limit.

There is a region where you can practice using the Land tools to terraform land.  Use Search/Places and use "terrforming" as a search term.  Or get a friend with land who will let you experiment.  Raise the land up as high as it will go, or as low as it will go.  Note what the terrain looks like when you do this.

Even if the land cannot be flattened as you would prefer, it's often usable.  Some people build artificial islands on land where the real land surface cannot be raised above sea level.  Others build homes on pilings, or place giant, flat-topped boulders on which to build a home.  Or you can just ignore the ground entirely and build on a sky platform.  Think creatively!
