Hi Bones,

I'm going to guess that you're seeing jelly dolls rather than fully formed and textured avatars. This is the result of your viewer's Avatar Maximum Complexity limit being set too low for the crowd you're wishing to see. Each avatar is given an ARC (Avatar Rendering Complexity) score that depends on the number and complexity of the avatar shape and attachments. The more complex that avatar, the more computationally intensive it is to render.

To allow less powerful computers to achieve acceptable frame rates in SL, the viewer provides a threshold setting for avatar complexity. Any avatars with ARC counts above the set threshold will be shown as monochromatic basic avatar shapes, or "jelly dolls". To see such avatars in all their glory, you must increase your rendering threshold. That setting is in Preferences->Graphics->Avatar Maximum Complexity. Drag that slider to the right to increase the complexity of avatars your viewer will render.

I'll add to Madelaine's answer.

Your default Complexity setting is based on your video card. As you increase the complexity setting you degrade performance. It is most noticable in crowds. If you are in sparsly populated regions, changing the setting may have no noticable effect on performance.

The viewer allows you save SETS of graphics settings. The icon is the computer screen in the upper right. You can save sets of 'settings' and quickly change between them.

So, you can have one set of settings for crowds and another set for the less populated places.

There is a video at the bottom. This is it:
