how to you make profile groups private?

You can almost get there if you open your profile, click the Settings tab, and go to Privacy >>> Groups.  You can restrict things so that groups are only visible by Friends, but you can't exclude everyone.  Personally, I make almost all of those Privacy settings as restrictive as I can, blocking as many people as possible from following me, seeing my picks and interests, and posting on my feed.  It works pretty well.

Group visibility in your profile

By default, others can see the groups to which you belong in your profile.

To hide a group so that it does not appear in your profile:

  1. Choose Communicate > Groups or right-click on yourself and choose My Groups.
  2. Click the group you want to hide 
  3. Click Group Profile.
  4. Deselect Show in my profile.
  5. Click Save.
