why am I not receiving IM messages from some of my friends when we try to chat via IM?

A frind and I try to chat via IM. they get my IM's but I can't seem to get their IM's or replies. why is that? They are not blocked and we can IM to each other just fine when we are in the same location, yet not when we are in separate locations. This has been going on for a week now. Please help. we Have tried unfriending each other and then adding each other again but it has not helped.

Check the channel on which you are IMing.  It should be in the bottom right corner.  The channel should be set to zero. If yours is not zero, change it.  Since you have ruled out muting, this may be your issue.
