You can texture individual sides of a prim by using Edit - Select Face.  That will allow you to select a single side of the cube prim and retexture or color.

So to do what you are asking, I would select the whole prim, set it to black and then use Edit - Select Face, select just one side and change it to white.

I agree with Cinn & would just add that depending which viewer you are on it may have different wording. On mine you click "Select Texture" in the edit box & then click on the face of the prim that you want to change.
