How can I edit the transparency of the nearby chat window.

If you are using the current V2.6 viewer, you will find the window transparency settings at  Me - Preferences - Colors.  Two settings for "Floater Opacity"  One for the active window and the other for when the window is Inactive.

No reason to feel silly. "Floater Opacity" is a pretty poor description for the feature. LL continues to make things harder than they should!
