If you received an item to your inventory (it was given to you) by a scam vendor, simply delete it from your inventory and you'll be fine.

These scams can only hurt your account if you wear them or place them on the ground - they typically try to drain all of your Linden Dollars (L$). Just make sure your boyfriend doesn't do that.

I'm not sure what makes you think the gift card was a scam.  Most gift cards from vendors at SL stores are legitimate.  It's the ones that strangers send you, unasked for, that are the scams.

In any case, if you buy something, or are offered it, if you click Decline, the object is...well, declined.  If you click Accept, it goes into your inventory.  It cannot do anything bad to you while it is just sitting in your inventory.

If you then rez it, or wear it, and it produces a notice saying that it's requesting the ability to take $L from you, DO NOT CLICK ACCEPT!  If you do, the object can then take money from your account as long as it is in world.  If you do click Accept by mistake, immediately delete the object or detach it, if you are wearing it.
