Having had to deal with a ton of grief and getting no response from numerous abuse reports, which I understand, I just hope there is a way to block these invasive gadgets so that I can get on with enjoying my SL

No, your on-line status is public information, easy to get with a simple 10 line script.  And, of course, anyone who belongs to a group that you are in can see whether you are on line by looking in the group profile.

The way to appear off line is to be offline.  When I want to work in quiet, I log on as an alt.
