You can learn basic skills like this by reading in the Knowledge Base, or by doing excellent self-guided tutorials at Caledon Oxbridge University or NCI in world.  There's a lot to learn, but any of those places will get you started quickly.

1. Open your inventory...the button with a suitcase symbol, or CTRL+I.
2. Right click in any open space in the inventory window, select New Notecard.
3. Type your message in the notecard window.  Click Save.
4. The notecard will be named "New Note" in your inventory.  Right click it and choose "Rename".  Give it a descriptive name, like "Thank-you Note to Lindal".  This is optional, but recommended so your inventory does not get filled up with things all named "New Note".
5. Now that you have created your notecard, it's time to send it!  There are many ways to send someone something.
   1. Drag it from your inventory and drop it onto their avatar, if they are near you.
   2. Or drop it onto their nametag, the name that appears above their avatar
   3. Or open their Profile and drop it onto their profile picture area
   4. Or drop it into an open IM (conversation) window with them.
   5. Or right click the item in your inventory and click Share in the context menu.  Follow the steps to select the person you want to share it with (send it to.)
   6. Or click the Share button in the inventory window.
