There's obviously something wrong with your Internet connection. The firewall was a good guess. Your anti-virus program would be another possibility. You should make exceptions for SL in both of them. It's hard to make any better guesses without knowing more about your computer and how it is connected to the Internet, but I would try
1. rebooting both your router and your modem and restarting everything.
2. getting off of wireless (neither recommended or supported by Linden Lab)
3. reading through a couple of lists of suggestions to see things that might apply to your situation:
