Neither one.  The work that generally causes heating issues is created when your graphics card has to process a ton of data.  For now, reduce your draw distance to 128 m or lower and consider buying a newer computer with a graphics card (not a chip) that can handle the load.  Most laptops are meant for light office and home use (e-mail, web browsing, YouTube videos, and basic on-line games).  For SL, you need a machine that was designed for gaming.

Unfortunately Rolig is right. Both put about the same load on a computer.

Cool VL Viewer and Singularity run well on older hardware. I'm not sure they will help with your problem.

Laptops can plug up with dust ...and hair if you have pets. If you are mechanically handy, look up 'disassemble [your laptop model]' and see how hard it is to open your case and clean out the dust. Or have a computer shop clean it.

A six year old laptop shouldn't have that much trouble running SL. Open the viewer and click HELP->ABOUT... can copy the info from that panel into any post where you ask a tech question. Without it we can't tell you if yours is an easy fix or a hopeless case.
