There didn't used to be any age-related maturity ratings in SL, because everyone here was over 18 in Real Life.  Kids 13-17 had a separate grid, "Teen Second Life."

There were always the three Maturity ratings though, G, M, and A.  General was for people who didn't want any sex and violence in their Second Life experience at all.  Adult was for the "anything goes" people on the other end of the spectrum.  Mature (now called "Moderate") was for the majority in the middle, who wanted to be able to pursue intimate activities in private, but weren't into public sex clubs and so on...those who felt that sex and violence have their place in a virtual world, but didn't want to see them everywhere they turned.

When Linden Lab closed Teen Second Life and merged it with Second Life, Maturity ratings became somewhat linked to Real Life age.  Kids 13 - 17 were limited to General regions, while those 18 and over could access all of Second Life, as always.
