ChinRey
USC Texture Tomb, Texture Sim was a sim full of texture stores. What made it special was that it only allowed stores selling original textures, not just uploads of other people's works. It' gone now. Maybe not the biggest loss in SL's history and I suppose most of the stores are still around somewhere. But even so, the end of a great initiative to promote originality in SL content creation. It's difficult to buy camera film at all, much less find a place to get it developed and printed. Sadly, more proof that nobody is taking pictures any more. Only people are taking pictures, they're just not using film. A Second Life texture store has a narrow clientelle - only people who are building things that flat textures are useful for, but who aren't able/willing to make them themselves. With more ways of building things there are fewer uses for simple textures.

You'd be amazed if you knew how much these "flat" as you say standard textures are still used today. And thankfully so. If everybody actually started to cover each and every surface in SL with unique baked textures, that would actually be the end of Second Life - imagine ten times the lag we have now. But apart from that, you're right of course. This is hardly the end of SL or anything. It's just that when somebody who made such a deliebrate stand for original content creation leave, we should show them our appreciation.
mikka Luik
Was made aware of the sim closing a few weeks ago via a group notice and made a point to take a wander round before the close date. Memories.. You are right, 'flat textures' still have a major place in making stuff even today - we don't all do clothes But yes my visits dropped off and of the one place I would actually be heading for - well they moved a little while back. Sad but things change. Places go.

Bobbie Faulds
Eagle has been having some health problems and could no longer maintain the sim. It may come back someday. In the meantime, most of the other vendors have moved. I know TImeless Textures has, for instance.

All those texture stores are there, MP and other places, so it's not a great example of SL dying. Better to use Tyche's grid reports for those negative thoughts about the "Long Tail". For myself though, I've mostly changed to procedurally generated textured in Blender Cycles for what I do. For those few things it can't do I grab a camera and take a picture of something real world, and manipulate it in photoshop.
