While you can play some games or enter contests at clubs etc.  You won't earn much and usually spend a lot more time doing it than it's worth.  Only do those for fun.

If you have skills in 3D modeling, textures, animations, etc, you could consider becoming a content creator.  Of course you can learn these things too but it will take a while.  Content creation is the most lucrative job there is if you are talented and are successful at it.  However not all talented people are successful.

That leaves jobs.  Here is a link on the subject:

Welcome to Second Life, MzBright3yez!

The easiest way to obtain L$ is to purchase them on the LindeX. That will require that you have an acceptable payment method on file. You can learn more about that here...

There are ways to "earn" small amounts of money in-world, you can learn more about that here...

http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/How_to_Earn_Linden_Dollars_in_Second_Life

Linden Lab's gambling game policies have changed since the creation of that page, so some of the ideas may no longer be allowed. Somewhere on that page it says that people have earned large sums of Lindens by playing games. That may be true, but I imagine those people expended extraordinary amounts of time to do so. And that brings up the concept of "opportunity cost". If you have absolutely nothing else to do, or get pleasure from finding pennies, then go head.

There are still some money trees around SL, though many of them only pay to residents 45 days old or younger. I don't see your profile online yet, so I'll guess you've yet to log-in for the first time and you'll have 45 days to find the trees.

If you have 3D computer design skills, you might create objects for sale in the marketplace, but that'll take a lot of time to learn how to build things for sale in SL, and you'll have lots of competition.

It's also possible to do quite a bit in SL without ever having money. You can find free clothing all around SL and in the marketplace, and that could keep you busy dressing up for quite some time. The biggest expense for most people here is for maintaining a "home". If you don't mind being a wanderer (like me!), you can avoid that expense. Your avatar vanishes when you log out, so there's no need to worry about parking it in some special place when you leave.

Good luck, have fun!

Second Life isn't really a game, at least not in the way other simulations or MMOs are made. There is no pre-set system or quests that reward you with currency. Instead Second Life is build on its very own economy. There are a few games that might reward to with a little cash (or some who border on cambling...), but the majority of people, who chose to earn their money instead to exchanging real life cash are having a virtual job.

Those jobs ususally don't pay anything that would even come close to a real life job, but most people also have fun doing it or are fine with it, because they don't need much. Some people offer a real life talent, that they have. Like musicans, singers or people who are good with scripting or using photoshop. Others have opened their own business and sell things they made. But the majority works in social/entertainment jobs. Clubs sometimes hire hosts and DJs or dancers. And then there are of course some people who earn their money in the erotic business as escorts.
