Personally, I have never understood why hundreds of people pay for those ads. They are displayed at random and there are so many of them that it is unlikely that you will see any specific one when you log in to the site.  Not only that, but I suspect that most people, like me, ignore them anyway and just click past to get to the things we are looking for.  That's just my opinion, of course.  I have never wanted to buy an ad myself to test it.
