You must be a Premium member to bid on a land auction.  That means that you're paying a monthly, quarterly, or annual fee for your Premium membership, even if you don't win the auction.

If you do win the auction, you will have the purchase price deducted from your account.  If you don't have enough $L to cover it, the money will be taken out of your registered payment method.

That's the PURCHASE PRICE, a one-time, up front payment.  After you've bought it, you are a Mainland owner, and the rules of Mainland "tier" fees for land will apply.

Tier is charged based on the maximum square meters of Mainland you own at any time during the billing cycle.  Let's assume that the auction parcel is the only Mainland that you own, that you are not donating tier to any of your groups, and that you don't have a Linden Home.

As a Premium member, you get free tier on the first 512 square meters.  If the auction parcel you won is 512 sq m. or less, then you will not owe any other payments.  However, if the parcel is larger than 512 sq m, you'll pay a monthly fee, according to the tier table here: https://secondlife.com/my/account/landfees.php?lang=en-US  Let's say that the auction parcel is 1024 sq m.  The first 512 is free, so you pay tier on the remaining 512, or $5 USD per month.

You will have the land as long as you like...the tier fee will be billed automatically every month.  When and if you decide you no longer want the land, you may sell it or abandon it.
