The Imprudence viewer has been out of date for quite a while, so it is not compatible with any of the changes that have been made in the Linden Lab viewer in the past year.  It's not too surprising that you could have problems with it.  Firestorm (not Phoenix, which has not existed for several years) is a different matter.  Their viewer is quite up to date, so I doubt that it's the problem.  It's more likely to be your Internet connection, which may be "great" for all sorts of things but not for SL.  Unlike most games that you may have played on the Internet, SL requires a steady, reliable connection so that it can stream data between Linden Lab servers and your viewer.  Bandwidth is rarely an issue, but stability is.  If your connection has more than a little packet loss or has bottlenecks when ping time is too long, the servers and your viewer will get out of sync and lose the connection.

Avoid using a wifi connection if you can.  Wifi is neither recommended nor supported by Linden Lab, and can have high signal loss and interference.  Reboot your router annd your modem to reestablish a stronger connection with an IP address.  Consider more advanced step, some of which are discussed here >>> http://blog.nalates.net/2011/10/26/troubleshoot-your-sl-connection/

I don't think Imprudence will login anymore because of outdated certificates.

I hope you mean Firestorm viewer & not Phoenix viewer. Phoenix viewer is almost as outdated now as Imprudence.

Are you able to login on the Linden Lab viewer from https://secondlife.com/support/downloads/ or Firestorm viewer from http://www.firestormviewer.org/downloads/ ?

I'm sorry, I did mean firestorm the newest version and imprudence I keep around just for working on my offline sims. The error does suggest that I check my connection and firewall. The firewall is good so it must be my connection. I have checked the connections by the computer, but haven't gone through the whole house. Sorry, I never thought of that until now. Probably because the rest shouldn't have been disturbed. But that doesn't mean it hasn't been. Thank you for all of the great and quick answers. I greatly appreciate it. I'll get back to post the fix just as soon as everything is solved. Thanks again...you people rock.

This is not so much an answer, but an appeal.  I am tired of not being able to get to my home sim, and having to try multiple times to get into Second life.  It is more of a burden than fun anymore.  I've talked to many people in SL, we don't need mesh, jelly dolls, all this other stuff that has been updated, and updated.  We need to go back to basics, have regular clothes, and be able to come into SL without repeated updates with bugs.  It's not about the stupid appearances - it's about the people behind the avatars.  When will someone get it?

Thank you for letting me sound off. I have been trying to get into secondlife for 2 hours and "see" my bf who is a dj.  We have decided Skype is more fun and less headache.  P.S.  I still can't get to my home sim - the firestorm viewer abruptly goes off, I can go anywhere else in SL except my home.  pfffffft!

A good appeal, and an even better rant. Unfortunately, we're all SL residents like you. Lindens never come here and there's little evidence that they ever have time to read what's here either. FWIW, mesh and 90% of the other things that have been added to SL over the years are things that residents have requested. Every new layer of technology brings new problems, though, and means that the average resident has to have a more sophisticated computer than she had even a couple of years before. I guess it means that we have to be careful what we ask for.
