Depends on what country you live in and the same for the offender.  In the USA, death threats of any sort sent through either electronic, voice, or written medium are strictly illegal and can lead to severe penalties, fines, law suits, etc., whether or not they are credible.  I'm almost certain that making death threats in Second Life voids your user contract.  Linden Labs SHOULD ban the offender.  Keep trying to report this to LL.  Look up your user contract for Second Life.  There is a list somewhere of what can get you banned forever.  I'm pretty sure that this is one of the offenses.  Quote this to LL next time you report it.

On a more personal note, start hanging with a better set of people.  If you are getting death threats, then you are hanging out with the wrong crowd.  People who deliver death threats are either jerks, psychos, or cowards who want to bully you because they are protected by their anonymity in Second Life.  Why would you want to expose yourself to those people?  Would you do that in RL?

If you are recieving death threats (or any threats) that appear to be credible (or if they concern you to the point of possibly being credible) report it to you local law enforcement.  Invite them to view any chat logs, IM's or emails.  You should also report the threats to Linden Lab.........but they cannot help beyond a ban of the person in question (way too little for a serious crime such as a death threat).  Only you can press charges against the person making the threats........not LL or anyone else.  If you are in the USA then a call to your local police will get the ball rolling........but SL, being an interntional medium, the FBI will likely be your ultimate contact.  Other countries will have different enforcement agencies but they all take death threats serously...........don't hesitate to call them.

First thing is to protect yourself and your loved ones.  Change your passwords on every program you have that requires a password.  Check your computer for a key logger (a normal anti-virus is not likely be able to do that for you).........Google "Keylogger defenses" to get more information on how to do that (worse case, wipe your hard drive of all data and reinstall your OS and the programs you need..........remember to back up data files like pictures and documents you want to keep but don't save the program files.  Let your local law enforcement to help you............it's not the first time this has happened and they know the procedures and steps.

If  you think this is real (or even think it might be real), shut down your computer right now, call your law enforcement, lock your doors and be very aware of your surroundings.  Second Life is not worth your first life..........forget it for a while until this is resolved.

By all means, report the threats along with copies of the chat logs to SL.

As others have said, don't stop there.  RL death threats fall under RL law enforcement.  Make copies of the threats and communicate them to your local police.

Never discount your instincts.  If you feel that this is cause for concern, then get help RL from the RL police.
